The Future of Museums Post-Covid
Tyree Boyd-Pates is a Los Angeles-based museum curator, historian, and public speaker whose museum work centers the African American experience in the American West. Recently, Tyree joined the Autry Museum of the American West as the Associate Curator of Western History. At the Autry, he is spearheading American history exhibitions and historical initiatives that engage communities across the region for archival purposes, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Black Lives Matters protests occurring across the American West. Boyd-Pates museum work has received mention in The New York Times, The LA Times, Vogue, NPR, Hollywood Reporter, and recently was selected by multi-Grammy award-winning producer and composer Pharrell Williams to be included in his guest-curated TIME Magazine issue “The New American Revolution” to discuss his views on American history. Currently, Boyd-Pates a 2021 Civic Media Fellow with the Annenberg Innovation Lab at USC and a 2021 Innovation Fellow with the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy.

Valerie Huaco was a registrar and conservator before leading exhibitions and collections. Peggy Monahan has spent decades leading teams to create innovative exhibitions. Erendina Delgadillo has curated recent projects on Black Power, Chicano history, and intersectional feminism. Violetta Wolf brings an access-focused approach to collections care and research.

The Autry has long been engaged with collecting from the community, a practice that evolved rapidly with the pandemic, shutdown, and calls for racial justice this summer. In addition to our Collecting Community History Initiative, we are pioneering ways to actively engage Native communities via their collections in our care.

Nicole Meldahl is Executive Director of Western Neighborhoods Project and a member of the CAM Program Committee. Overseen by Meldahl, this initiative earned WNP a write up in the San Francisco Chronicle, a feature on KTVU news, and a retweet by the National Council on Public History.
