What does resiliency look like for museums in the COVID-19 era? Hear from Gail Anderson about a resiliency model that can help museums chart their future and from Dr. Melanie A. Adams and Micah Parzen on ways that the Anacostia Community Museum and the Museum of Us are actively practicing resiliency techniques that promote equity, public engagement and representation.
Melanie A. Adams, PhD, currently serves as the Director of the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. Before joining the Smithsonian, Dr. Adams served as the Deputy Director for Learning Initiatives at the Minnesota Historical Society overseeing the state’s 26 historic sites. Prior to Minnesota, she spent twelve years at the Missouri Historical Society as the Managing Director for Community Education and Events. Dr. Adams is an active member of the museum community and served on the board of the American Association for State and Local History and is a former president of the Association of Midwest Museums.
Gail Anderson, president of Gail Anderson & Associates (GA&A), works with museum leaders facilitating institutional transformation, building institutional and leadership capacity, and expanding community and global relevance - particularly critical now in light of the reemergence of racial inequities and the implication for museums, and the economic strain triggered by the global pandemic. GA&A tailors each project to fit each museum whether strategic planning, organizational restructuring, institutional assessment and reinvention, board development, as well as executive coaching. She has worked with more than 65+ clients and completed over 105+ projects, the majority of which are repeat clientele speaking to long-term relationships.
Micah Parzen is a husband (to Marguerite), a father (to Abner and Oscar), an anthropologist (Ph.D. Case Western Reserve University; BA UC Berkeley), an attorney (JD UC Davis), a non-profit governance geek, and a museum lover. He joined the Museum of Us (formerly known as the San Diego Museum of Man) as its CEO in 2010. Over the past ten years, he and his team have gradually transformed the organization from a musty, dusty, and tired institution into a leading edge museum, known for its anti-racism and decolonizing initiatives. On August 2, 2020, the Museum of Us proudly announced a new name for a new era.
