Senator Alan Lowenthal and Assemblymember Pedro Nava Recognized for Their Support of California Museums

May 21, 2007

Two prominent California elected officials, Senator Alan Lowenthal and Assemblymember Pedro Nava, were presented with the California Association of Museums’ (CAM) 2007 President’s Award in recognition of their support of California Museums in May 2007.

Kate Davies, CAM Board Member and Executive Director of the Downey Museum of Art, presented Senator Alan Lowenthal with the President’s Award on Saturday, May 12th in conjunction with a family and children’s festival and with city council members, artists, board members, and teachers in attendance. Lowenthal was chosen to receive the President’s Award in part because he introduced a resolution last January naming May 2007 as California Museum Month, which was chaptered on March 9, 2007. The resolution may be viewed at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/sen/sb_0001-0050/scr_5_bill_20070309_chaptered.html.

Assemblymember Nava was presented his award at the Santa Barbara Zoo on Friday, May 18th by CAM President Richard Block, CEO/Director of the Santa Barbara Zoo, with Phillip Johnston, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and Karl Hutterer, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, in attendance. Assemblymember Nava was chosen in part for his outstanding support of the cultural institutions in his district.

Recipients of the California Association of Museums’ President’s Award are elected officials in California state government who have shown support of California museums, demonstrated a continuing commitment to museums in California, and shown publicly their support of museums in their local district.
