2012 CONFERENCE
February 15-17, 2012 • Berkeley, CA
What are you capable of making? Join CAM in 2012 to network with colleagues, tap into the innovation and creativity we all possess, and learn how you can “make it happen” at your museum.
The 2012 CAM conference, Museums Making It Happen, featured:
While conference sessions will address various aspects of museum work, other experiences will highlight the Maker/DIY movement and what we can learn through experimentation and participation. The Maker movement is lead by a community of do-it-yourselfers that embraces the art of making cool things with a quirky spirit. For Makers, and those learning from this movement, the process is as important as the product, and experimentation and participation are the principal motivators. The Maker movement has been propelled by Maker Faire, a huge gathering that started in the Bay Area about six years ago, and is now presented in several locations across the country with museum participation and support. Especially at a time when museums are exploring new ways of engaging audiences, there are lessons to be learned from this exciting movement.
At our first town hall meeting, Dale Dougherty, the creator of Maker Faire, Dennis Bartels, the Executive Director of the Exploratorium, and Steve Young, the Director of the Crucible, will introduce the Maker movement and discuss the potential impact on museums. Throughout the conference, California museums will host Maker Stations where conference attendees can experience “making” and see first-hand how participation and experimentation lead to greater understanding of art, history, and science.
Another town hall will close the conference with an experience facilitated by Kathleen McLean, Principal of Independent Exhibitions, Randy Roberts, Deputy Director of the Crocker Art Museum, and Julie Johnson, John Roe Chair of Museum Leadership at the Science Museum of Minnesotas. The town hall will help attendees transition from knowledge to action and explore ways to “Make It Happen” at their own institutions.
