CALIFORNIA MUSEUM MONTH IS MAY 2008 - USE IT TO PROMOTE YOUR MUSEUM!
At the 2008 CAM conference in Fresno, Gayle Holman, a field representative for Assemblyman Mike Villines announced that the assemblymember introduced ACR 100 to proclaim May 2008 as California Museum Month! SCR 100 highlights the vital role museums play in educating our state’s students and citizens. The bill can be read in its entirety at http://www.calmuseums.org/news/ACR_100.pdf.
CAM encourages the state's museums to use this opportunity to promote your museum's education programs. The purpose of California Museum Month is to focus the attention of legislators, the media, and the public on the important role that museums play in the state of California. Our museums are located in every county and region throughout California, represent a multitude of disciplines, collect and interpret our natural and cultural world, offer learning experience for all ages, and attract tens-of-millions of visitors annually. We have a lot to celebrate and communicate to the policymakers in Sacramento. The following are some ways your institution can leverage this opportunity or join CAM's advocacy efforts:
Resources, draft materials, and information are available on CAM's website to help museum professionals be advocates for their institutions as well as the state's museums. Visit CAM's California Museum Month webpage at http://www.calmuseums.org/news/index.html for additional ideas or resources.
TAKE ACTION NOW TO INCREASE IMLS' FUNDING FOR MUSEUMS
Are you located in Los Angeles, the East Bay Area, Santa Clara County, or San Bernardino County? If so, you can play an important role in increasing the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) budget for museums--a role that will only require about five minutes of your time!
Below is a list of the members of the California delegation on the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, the subcommittee that oversees funding for IMLS. A team of representatives from the Federal Formula Grant Coalition, American Association of Museums, Association of Art Museum Directors, Association of Science-Technology Centers, and the American Zoo and Aquarium Association have been on the Hill meeting with members of the Appropriations Subcommittees. This group has been advocating for $6 million more than what is in the President's budget, for a total of $45 million--the level IMLS would be at if funding increases over the past four years stayed the same as the increases experienced from 2003-2005. But this influential group needs assistance from the field.
Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA)
Barbara Lee (CA)
Michael Honda (CA)
Jerry Lewis (CA)
If any of the above individuals represent your congressional district, we strongly encourage you to take minutes to copy text from a template/draft letter, paste it onto your letterhead, fill in any blanks about your organization, and FAX it to three numbers. It is that easy! Yet, those simple steps can make a significant difference in influencing your elected official's support for IMLS. Please download the sample letter at http://www.calmuseums.org/news/IMLS_template_letter_March_2008.doc or http://www.calmuseums.org/news/IMLS_template_letter_March_2008.pdf and take action today! If you have any questions, please contact Celeste DeWald, CAM Executive Director, at cam@calmuseums.org or (831) 471-9970.
SUPPORT CAM'S ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC AWARENESS EFFORTS
For years, CAM has been projecting a positive image of California museums to our elected officials and the media – and will continue to do so in the coming year. In 2007, CAM’s Legislative and Communications Committees actively promoted the state’s museums and presented them as thriving and essential educational institutions that are valued by California’s citizens and visitors. We are proud of what we accomplished in 2007 and are looking forward to partnering with California's museums in 2008 to make an even bigger impact.
With the state facing a $16 billion deficit, it is vital that California museums continue to have a voice in Sacramento. A budget crisis on this level could impact funding from city or county sources as well as nonprofit tax policies. CAM is monitoring legislation and taking strategic steps to maximize funding opportunities when they do arise and reverse harmful tax policies.
This level of advocacy is expensive. CAM is unable to fund this work solely through memberships. For that reason, we ask that you support CAM’s advocacy role by making a financial contribution. If every California museum made a donation, we would have a fully funded advocacy program.
To learn more about CAM's advocacy and public awareness accomplishments in 2007 or to learn how you can make a contribution, please see http://www.calmuseums.org/news/2008_appeal.pdf. We appreciate your support and look forward to working with you in 2008 to continue giving California’s museums a positive voice.
PREPARE FOR MAY DAY – A NATIONAL EFFORT TO PROTECT COLLECTIONS FROM DISASTERS
Archives, libraries, museums, and historic preservation organizations across America are encouraged to set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay, a national effort to protect collections from disasters. Organizations are urged to take at least one simple step towards preparing for disasters. Some ideas from the Heritage Emergency National Task Force include:
If your organization participates in this nationwide effort, let Heritage Preservation know what you did by emailing taskforce@heritagepreservation.org. In return, organizations will receive a free Working with Emergency Responders: Tips for Cultural Institutions poster. Heritage Preservation is also offering its popular Field Guide to Emergency Response and Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel at special MayDay discounts from April 15 to May 31. For more information about MayDay, see http://www.heritagepreservation.org.
MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: MUSEUMS AND ACCESSIBLE PROGRAMS (POLL EXTENDED THROUGH MARCH)
Socioeconomic trends such as aging and other factors have contributed to the growth of a disabled population in the United States. People with disabilities make up a large and diverse group, with estimates that 50 million adults, or one out of every five, has a disability or impairment that causes limitations in activities. These limitations may include physical and developmental disabilities, speech, hearing and visual impairments, or the natural effects of the aging process. With 20% of the population being affected, CAM would like to know if your museum is offering programs specifically targeted to this population and/or designed with accessibility in mind.

CAC SEEKS IMAGES OF CALIFORNIA ARTS FOR WEBSITE
For the homepage of their newly redesigned website, the California Arts Council (CAC) is seeking to feature revolving photos of arts organizations throughout the state. All photo submissions should be in JPG format, in color, and need to have appropriate release forms and copyright permissions. Portions of a photo may be used, and the best photos have the primary subject on a long horizontal (vertical photos will not work). When submitting, include information about your organization, the contents of the photo (names of groups, performances, individuals, etc. as appropriate), and photo credit information. The California Arts Council will post photos of California arts and artists based on a number of different criteria. Please email editor@caartscouncil.com with questions or to submit photos.
NEW YORK TIMES HIGHLIGHTS STRUGGLES OF MUSEUMS AND CURRENT PERIOD OF MAJOR CHANGE
Museums are in a period of major change that is often coupled with uncertainty, according to a special supplement in the Arts section of The New York Times. In the lead article of the supplement, the Times reports that as museums continue to expand and face rising costs, market research has never been more critical for their survival. Under pressure to maintain a healthy base of visitors, as well as to raise capital for expansions and renovations, many museums have turned to the business world to recruit new directors. Curators, however, now are fighting back to obtain these leadership positions. Other stories in the special section include: a look at efforts by museums to rent out space for special events; and a discussion of how the decision by philanthropist Eli Broad to leave his vast collection of contemporary art in one of his foundations rather than donating it to a museum appears to be causing panic among museum staff members who fear the decision will inspire more donors to do likewise. To view this special New York Times supplement, see http://www.nytimes.com/pages/arts/artsspecial/index.html. [Excerpted from the Chronicle of Philanthropy, March 12, 2008]

SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED – BARRIERS FOR “NEXT GENERATION” NONPROFIT LEADERS
According to a newly released study by Myers Publications, poor earning potential, increase in fundraising responsibilities and pressure, a lack of mentors and life-style challenges are stifling the next generation of nonprofit leaders from continuing their professional endeavors in the nonprofit world. Over 6,000 next-generation leaders were surveyed, and their responses showed that although nonprofits are successful at recruiting recent college graduates, most organizations are not doing enough to retain them. In many areas, this is predicted to result in a leadership void, which could have a dramatic effect on groups that offer essential services. To read the report, Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out, see http://meyerfoundation.org/newsroom/meyer_publications/ready_to_lead.
IMLS ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF STUDY ON THE INTERNET’S IMPACT ON MUSEUMS AND LIBRARIES
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has released the results of InterConnections: A National Study of Users and Potential Users of Online Information at the recent annual IMLS WebWise Conference in Miami. This new report offers insight into the ways people search for information in the online age, and how this impacts the ways they interact with public libraries and museums, both online and in person. The study found that: libraries and museums are the most trusted sources of online information among adults of all ages, education levels, races, and ethnicities; libraries and museums rank higher in trustworthiness than all other information sources including government, commercial, and private Web sites; and, that the public trust of museums and libraries migrates to the online environment.
