IMLS / URBAN INSTITUTE SEEKS MUSEUM SURVEY RESPONDENTS, ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HEARINGS

Museums of all kinds, from art to zoos, are encouraged to participate in an important new study of public funding in the United States. The survey will provide a detailed look at the size, scope, and challenges created by public support for museums from federal, state and local governments. This short, confidential survey is being conducted by The Urban Institute, a non-partisan economic and social policy research organization based in Washington, D.C. through a cooperative agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

To fill out the survey, go to http://www.museumpublicfinance.org by December 21. For questions about the online survey, please e-mail or call one of the Urban Institute principal investigators: Carlos Manjarrez (cmanjarr@ui.urban.org) at (202) 261-5821 or Carole Rosenstein (crosenst@buffalo.edu) at (716) 645-2437 x1468.

As part of the same study, IMLS has also announced that it will hold public hearings in three cities to collect opinions and perspectives on how museums can best serve the public. Details about participation in the hearings will be released in early February 2008. The tentative schedule is: The Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, OH on March 10, 2008; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO on March 12, 2008; and the Oakland Museum of California on March 14, 2008. CALIFORNIA CULTURAL DATA PROJECT – INFORMATION SESSION MATERIALS AVAILABLE ONLINE

The California Cultural Data Project (California CDP) is a statewide collaboration that will collect comprehensive information about the cultural sector in California. The Project is dedicated to strengthening the arts in California and streamlining the grant application process for cultural organizations. The California Cultural Data Project is a collaboration of many of the public and private arts funders in the state, including the California Arts Council, The Getty Foundation, The James Irvine Foundation, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. It is administered by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The California Cultural Data Project has created a website for downloading the information that was shared during the recent statewide project information sessions. This data download center can be found at http://www.caculturaldata.org/documents.html and includes a FAQ sheet, basic steps to help organizations prepare to use the system, a blank data profile, general instructions, and a sample report.

CAM encourages all museums to become familiar with the California Cultural Data Project. The official website will launch on January 4, 2008 and include more detailed information and a calendar for future training sessions. For questions, email help@caculturaldata.org or call (866) 9-CAL-CDP.

CAC ANNOUNCES GRANT PROGRAMS AND GUIDELINE WORKSHOPS

The California Arts Council (CAC) has opened the application process for two grant programs: “Creating Public Value” and "Artists in Schools." Through the "Creating Public Value" grant program, the CAC seeks to partner with California arts organizations in rural or underserved areas to implement projects that make a positive contribution to communities utilizing tools identified as “The Three R’s”: Relationships (building partnerships), Relevance (to audiences and community), and Return on Investment (making the case to the authorizing environment). The deadline for applications is January 23, 2008. The intent of the "Artists in Schools" program is to integrate community arts resources—artists and professional art organizations—into a comprehensive, standards-based program that underscores the critical role that the arts play in shaping a student’s overall well-being and academic achievement. The deadline to apply is January 30, 2008.

In preparation for these grant deadlines, CAC will present a series of Guideline Workshops in various locations in California to guide potential grant applicants on the best practices for the California Arts Council’s “Artists in Schools” and “Creating Public Value” grant programs. Workshops will take place in Fresno (December 11), Stockton (December 11), Vallejo (December 12), Bakersfield (December 14), Lakeport (December 17), Visalia (December 19), Modesto (December 20) and San Benito (December 20). More information regarding the grants and workshops is available at http://www.cac.ca.gov.

NOVEMBER MUSEUM POLL RECAP: IS YOUR MUSEUM PREPARED TO FACE A NATURAL DISASTER?

In light of the recent wildfires in Southern California, CAM asked CAM e-News subscribers if their museums had an emergency preparedness plan in place and trained staff or volunteers to implement it.

Less than half of the respondents (41.7%) indicated they do have an emergency plan in place with trained staff or volunteers. A quarter of respondents (25%) said they need to develop a plan. Meanwhile, one-sixth (16.7%) claimed they either have a plan but need to revisit it or do not know anything about their plan if they have one. These numbers suggest that the majority of museums are not prepared for a natural disaster, either because they do not have an up-to-date emergency plan or have not adequately trained or informed their staff members. Here are some comments from our subscribers:

Thanks to our amazing Collections Manager and some interns, we have a Disaster Plan that will assist us greatly in meeting our needs (or the needs of others) in the event of a disaster. Three of the six staff went through our city's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and the rest will do it next year! It feels good to have it under our belts. All we need to do now is to practice it! -- Anonymous

Consider it luck, but our area has not been hit with wildfires, floods, earthquakes, or any other disaster. This being said, we have not taken immediate action as the urgency is not there. -- Karen Mehring, Folsom History Museum

We are trained and our staff would do just fine but I bet they don't believe it. So I guess it's a wake up call to management to revisit the plan. -- Anonymous

To read other comments from our respondents, visit http://www.calmuseums.org/e-news/poll/2007-11.html. Thank you to those of you who participated!

MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: MUSEUMS AND CHRISTMAS

It ‘tis the holiday season – the time of year when many museums present holiday-themed programs, host employee or volunteer appreciation events, and decorate their lobbies or staff offices. According to some studies, over 90 percent of Americans celebrate Christmas. But, to some, this may exclude individuals and families that recognize Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or other observances. This poses a dilemma for museums that may wish to appeal to the majority while being inclusive of all traditions. Has your museum made a conscious decision to incorporate Christmas traditions or avoid them?

MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL:

Does your museum use Christmas decorations or traditions for your holiday events?
