GREEN MUSEUMS INITIATIVE WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
There is an exciting movement sweeping across the museum field in California: the Green Museums Initiative. In 2006, the CAM Board of Directors took the forward-thinking step to develop a Green Museums Initiative (GMI) Committee to inspire California museums to develop green business practices, eco-friendly facility management, and sustainable programming. Our first goal was to update the daily operations and programs of CAM to serve as a model for other institutions and decrease our own ecological footprint. The greening of the 2007 CAM Conference in Long Beach was the GMI’s first step in achieving this goal, which included sessions on sustainability and the implementation of many eco-friendly practices. Thanks in part to sponsorship support, CAM was able to make significant progress in becoming a green conference. For more in-depth information about the greening of the 2007 CAM Conference, see http://www.greenmuseums.info.
In 2008, GMI’s goal is to provide the California museum field - and colleagues across the nation - with the resources and information to make a difference in their own organizations and communities. The committee is currently developing an outline for a website and discussing the best strategies for providing our colleagues in the museum field with greener resources. We want to know what information would be helpful to you in your efforts to “green” your museum and your work. We invite you to share your stories with GMI as we build a greener community. The GMI Committee will be conducting a focus group at the 2008 CAM Conference to elicit feedback on the website layout and design. Contact Kate Davies, Chair of GMI, at gmi@calmuseums.org to share your needs or stories or let us know if you would like to participate in the website focus group meeting.

AAM POSTS FACT SHEET ON MUSIC LICENSING IN MUSEUMS
The American Association of Museums (AAM) has posted an online fact sheet that provides an overview of music licensing in museums. The fact sheet can help museums determine whether it is necessary to obtain a license for their musical performances. Museums frequently use music in various aspects of their operations, from live concerts and performances for special events to recorded music in galleries, shops, restaurants, or elevators. In many cases, such public use of music requires the permission of the copyright owner of the musical composition. To compensate the copyright owner and reduce the risks of legal liability, museums should determine whether it is necessary to obtain a license for their musical performances. With the help of Troy Klyber, Intellectual Property Manager at The Art Institute of Chicago, the AAM Information Center has developed a fact sheet on music licensing in museums. To download the fact sheet, see http://www.aam-us.org/upload/Music_Licensing.pdf.
The timing of this fact sheet is ideal since many museums have recently been contacted by BMI, a music licensing company. AAM has no relationship with BMI and has not endorsed its products or the use of AAM's name.

MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: IS YOUR MUSEUM PREPARED TO FACE A NATURAL DISASTER?
The recent wildfires in Southern California forced a handful of museums to implement their evacuation plans and, in some instances, historic buildings were destroyed (see CAM e-News 11/7/2007). Even museums that were not in the burn areas dealt with soot-filled air and related clean-up projects. A natural disaster on this scale could happen in any California community and every museum could face an evacuation or worse. CAM wants to know if your museum has developed an emergency preparedness plan and trained staff or volunteers to implement it.
