SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES AND THEIR IMPACT ON MUSEUMS

The recent wildfires have had a significant impact on many of our colleagues in Southern California - especially in San Diego. Now that this disaster is transitioning from being an emergency situation to a clean-up, we are beginning to have a clearer picture of the full impact the wildfires have had on museums and other cultural organizations--and the estimated affect they will have for many months ahead. The following are some examples of how the wildfires have impacted our colleagues:

  • The Sikes Adobe Historic Farmhouse in San Diego was badly burned in the Witch Fire on October 23rd. They opened as a museum in 2004 after a restoration effort. Only a few of the original 1870 walls still stand. They have photographs on their website of the devastation, at http://www.sdrp.org/projects/sikes.htm.
  • The Barona Cultural Center and Museum in Lakeside was evacuated and the wildfires were very close to the museum. Thankfully, their collection and museum were spared. Conservators visited their site last Friday to assess the smoke damage to the museum and collections.
  • Many historic homes and buildings were lost in the fires. San Diego-based Save Our Heritage Organization is tracking and assessing the damage to the area's historic facilities. See http://sohosandiego.org/main/fires.htm for an updated list. They are assessing the needs and will be establishing a fund to assist historic sites as they rebuild.
  • Of the over 3,500 animals that reside at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, two animals (a clapper rail and a kiang) were lost due to complications from the fire. More than 600 acres of Wild Animal Park property, all of which were buffer zones and not exhibit or public access space, were burned. Although the exhibits and animals weathered the storm, the Wild Animal Park did lose one of their empty condor breeding facilities to the fire as well as a storage facility. Additional information can be read at http://sandiegozoo.org/wpmu/fire/.
  • Staff members, volunteers, donors, and board members were affected with residential evacuations and, in some cases, the loss of their homes.
  • Many organizations were cleaning up soot and ash for days the fires.
  • Several museums were closed on the days the wildfires were burning.
  • A handful of museums hosted free admission or special programs for families affected by the wildfires (see http://www.redlandsdailyfacts.com/news/ci_7302818).
  • Even a week after the fires were contained, one colleague said his museum has continued to experience significant decreases in attendance.
  • Several museum colleagues said they expect to experience significant decreases in their annual appeals as donors will be redirecting their donations to wildfire related causes.

The recent wildfires could serve as a “wake up call” for all California museums and encourage them to prepare a disaster plan and response team immediately (see Monthly Museum Poll Below). Look in future editions of CAM e-News for additional information on related CAM initiatives. Please contact Celeste DeWald, Executive Director, at (831) 471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org with any questions or comments.

FEDERAL FORMULA GRANTS FOR MUSEUMS, PART II OF II

This is Part II of a two-part series on federal formula grants for museums in CAM e-news to both inform and involve CAM's constituents. In the last edition, we provided background information on federal formula grants and the impact they could have on museums. To read Part I, see http://www.calmuseums.org/news/FFG.html. Part II below focuses on the advocacy effort and immediate steps museum leaders could take in support of our goal.

ABOUT THE FEDERAL FORMULA GRANT COALITION
Service organizations representing museums at the state, regional, and national level have joined forces to seek reauthorizing legislation for IMLS in 2009 that includes federal formula grants for museums. Through collaboration, museum service providers formed the Federal Formula Grant Coalition to act as the governing body for future legislation presented to Congress, with the American Association for State and Local History serving as the Coalition Administrator. CAM became a member of this coalition in May 2006 and has been an active member in recruiting other state museum associations, developing the case statement, attending national meetings on federal funding, and shaping the draft legislation. To see a complete list of the Federal Formula Grant Coalition members, see http://www.aaslh.org/documents/CoalitionMembers.doc. The Federal Formula Grant Coalition retained the services of a Washington-based lobbying firm, Washington Strategies, in late Spring 2007 to both inform and represent the coalition’s interests.

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO TO SUPPORT THIS EFFORT
The FFGC needs your support and action now. It is vital that museum leaders communicate with their U.S. representatives to inform them about the need for federal formula grants for museums and ask that they play a leadership role. The sooner the Federal Formula Grant Coalition can gain commitments from members of Congress, the stronger the chances will be of securing more federal funding for museums in America.
Visit http://www.calmuseums.org/news/FFG.html today to learn how 10 minutes of your time could make a significant difference.

We sincerely hope you will join our effort to create a new funding source for California museums. If you have any questions, please contact Celeste DeWald, CAM's Executive Director, at cam@calmuseums.org or (831) 471-9970 for additional information.

2008 CAM CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHT – WEB 2.0 AND MUSEUMS

The next CAM Conference, Seeds of Change: CAM in the Heart of California, will take place in Fresno, February 25-27, 2008 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center. The preliminary program, schedule, and registration information are now available online at http://www.calmuseums.org/conferences_and_workshops/2008overview.html. In each edition of CAM e-News until the conference, we will highlight a session, workshop, evening event, or other aspect of the conference:

Web 2.0 (Part 1): What’s All the Buzz? Using New Technologies to Educate and Increase Participation
Whether you’re in marketing, communications, or education or you’re just trying to find ways to increase participation; this session will have something for you. Podcasting, blogs, virtual environments (Second Life, Whyville), social media (YouTube, LinkedIn); you’ll understand the potential of each of these and more. These new technologies bring opportunities for all museums, regardless of size or budget. This session will be followed by Web 2.0 (Part 2): Brainstorming the Possibilities, an informal “town hall meeting” and brainstorming session on how the museum community can use some of these cutting edge new web applications. See the CAM Conference schedule for February 26th for a list of speakers and additional information.

OCTOBER MUSEUM POLL RECAP: WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH $2 MILLION?

In October, CAM asked CAM e-News subscribers to pretend their museum had been given a no-strings-attached donation of $2 million and they alone were to determine what to do with the funds. Specifically, we asked, "What is the first thing you would spend the $2 million on?"

Nearly half of the respondents (47.8%) indicated they would spend the money on collections care materials and/or a new storage unit. A quarter of respondents (26.1%) said they would spend the money on raises for staff members. Others indicated they would spend the funds on facility upgrades (21.7%), an endowment (17.4%), and new development staff members (13%). Less than ten percent said they would fund exhibitions or education programs with this new donation.

To read some comments from our respondents, visit http://www.calmuseums.org/e-news/poll/2007-10.html.

MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: IS YOUR MUSEUM PREPARED TO FACE A NATURAL DISASTER?

The recent wildfires in Southern California forced a handful of museums to implement their evacuation plans and, in some instances, historic buildings were destroyed (see feature above). Even museums that were not in the burn areas dealt with soot-filled air and related clean-up projects. A natural disaster on this scale could happen in any California community and every museum could face an evacuation or worse. CAM wants to know if your museum has developed an emergency preparedness plan and trained staff or volunteers to implement it.
