The presenter is Stephanie Weaver, a consultant to commercial and non-profit organizations on marketing, branding, and the customer experience. Dates and locations:
Fees: $70 CAM member / $80 Non-member. See http://www.calmuseums.org/conferences_and_workshops/workshops.html for registration information. | 2008 CAP APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE |
Heritage Preservation’s Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) applications are now available. CAP helps small to mid-sized museums of all types, from art museums to zoos, obtain a general assessment of the condition of their collections, environment, and historic buildings. Following an on-site assessment by a conservation professional, the museum receives a written report recommending priorities to improve collections care. This report assists museums in educating staff and board members on conservation practices, creating long-range and emergency plans, and raising funds to improve the care of their collections. For museums with buildings more than 50 years old, CAP also supports an assessment by a historic building assessor. A second assessment (re-CAP) is available to organizations who participated in CAP prior to 2001.
To receive an application, call the CAP staff at (202) 233-0800 or download it from Heritage Preservation's website at http://www.heritagepreservation.org. The postmark deadline for applications is December 1, 2007. Heritage Preservation's CAP is supported through a cooperative agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

| SEPTEMBER MUSEUM POLL RECAP: THE IMPACT OF NEW MUSEUMS ON EXISTING MUSEUMS |
In September 2007, CAM asked CAM e-News subscribers if new museums in California will have a negative or positive effect on existing museums, reacting to recent news that Donald and Doris Fisher, the San Francisco billionaires who co-founded the Gap clothing chain, plan to build a 100,000 square foot museum in San Francisco's Presidio to showcase their contemporary art collection. Approximately two out of five respondents (43%) claimed that new museums will have a positive effect by raising awareness among funders, the public, and the media about all museums and fostering healthy competition and collaboration. Meanwhile, 43% said that the effect of new museums depends on a number of factors, including the available resources within the community, the quality and professionalism of the new institutions, and whether there is an overlap of missions. Only 13% felt the impact would be negative, citing concerns about competing for limited resources and visitors.
To read some thought-provoking quotes from our respondents, see our SEPTEMBER POLL RECAP. Thank you to the respondents for sharing their opinions with CAM.
| MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH $2 MILLION? |
Past CAM Monthly Polls have focused on serious topics. Let's lighten things up and have some fun this month! Let's pretend your museum has been given a no-strings-attached donation of $2 million and the donor has stipulated that you (and only you) are to decide how the money should be spent. What is the first thing you would spend the $2 million on?

IRS RELEASES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT "E-POSTCARD"
The IRS posted 14 frequently asked questions about the new Form 990-N, Electronic Notice on its website in September. The 990-N, also known as the "e-Postcard," is an electronic information return that small tax-exempt organizations must file if their gross receipts are usually $25,000 or less. The e-Postcard asks for basic identifying information such as the organization's legal name, address and employee identification number, as well as the name and address of its principal officer. E-filing is a requirement for small tax-exempt organizations. To view the FAQ, see http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=173864,00.html.

NONPROFITS CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO GDP, STUDY FINDS
According to a new study from Johns Hopkins University, civil society sector contributes as much to the gross domestic product in a wide range of countries as the construction and finance industries, and twice as much as the utilities industry. The report, Measuring Civil Society and Volunteering: Initial Findings from Implementation of the UN Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions (9 pages, PDF), includes data generated by official statistical agencies in the United States and seven other countries. The report also found that philanthropy and volunteering generate at most only about one-third of nonprofit revenue; the balance comes from government funding and fees. Within philanthropy, gifts of time outdistance gifts of cash by almost two to one, and volunteer work accounts for approximately one-quarter of the economic contribution of nonprofit institutions on average. To read the full report, see http://www.jhu.edu/~ccss/publications/pdf/Measuring_Civil_Society.pdf.
