OCTOBER 5TH IS CALIFORNIA ARTS DAY

The California Arts Council (CAC) has announced that October 5 will be California Arts Day. This year's theme is "California Comes Alive with the Arts." The CAC's goal is for Californians to explore what's offered by local arts organizations during the California Arts Day weekend or other times during October and to demonstrate the role and value of arts and culture throughout our state. The CAC encourages the celebration of California Arts Day by working to make this a commonly recognized annual statewide event.

Is your community or arts organization doing something on Friday, October 5, or that weekend, or that week or within the month of October that can be labeled a California Arts Day event? Examples of previous events that have been planned are: presentations to local officials who support the arts, dedications of public art, chalk festivals, free theater events, children’s hand-on arts events, performances in the park, gallery tours, and many others. Virtually anything in the month of October can be dedicated as a California Arts Day event. Please forward the following information on your California Arts Day event(s) to Mona Ereiqat at mereiqat@caartscouncil.com. Please provide Mona the following required information: Event name; Date and Time; Organization; Address; County; Brief Description; Specific Promotion (discount, special event, etc); Contact name; Contact phone/email; and Webpage URL. For more information on California Arts Day 2007, see: http://www.cac.ca.gov/358/.

AUGUST MUSEUM POLL RECAP: MUSEUM PROGRAMS AND LATINO AUDIENCES

In August, CAM asked CAM e-News subscribers if their museums were planning to offer programs in the next five years specifically for Latino audiences. Over two-thirds of respondents (69.6%) claimed that their museums will be hosting such programs, explaining that Latinos are a part of their communities and an audience they would like to attract. Meanwhile over a quarter (26.1%) of California museums are not planning to develop programs specifically for Latino audiences because they believe their museums serve the population as a whole (as opposed to a certain cultural group) or because they are an ethnic-specific museum other than Latino. Here are some of the responses:Will your museum offer programs in the next five years specifically for Latino audiences?

"As the face of California changes, we are embracing these changes with programs and exhibits to welcome these families." -- Lorraine Yglesias, Sr. Marketing Manager, Diversity, Monterey Bay Aquarium

"Even though [Latinos] represent a significant portion of the local population, our museum does not see them comfortably participating as either visitors or members." -- Anonymous

"It is a significant part of our community and an audience that is important to us. Their history is an integral part of our community history and we want and need their involvement in all aspects of our operations." -- Anonymous

"As a Museum whose mission is to teach about the history of the automobile especially as it pertains to the city of Los Angeles, we would be ignoring a huge segment of the city's inhabitants by not offering programs specifically for Latino audiences." -- Meg Ford, Grant Development Coordinator, Petersen Automotive Museum

"We have already identified a large portion of the demographics of our audience as Latino. In the last 2 years we have presented 2 Latino themed art exhibitions. Both were well received and expanded the audience's awareness of Latino artists while showcasing their talent." -- Anonymous

Thank you to the respondents for sharing their museums' plans with CAM. See below about participating in the current Monthly Museum Poll.

MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: THE IMPACT OF NEW MUSEUMS ON EXISTING MUSEUMS

In August, newspapers across the country announced that Donald and Doris Fisher, the San Francisco billionaires who co-founded the Gap clothing chain, plan to build a 100,000 square foot museum in San Francisco's Presidio to showcase their contemporary art collection. The impact of this new museum on San Francisco and existing museums has been discussed in the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and the New York Times. Some bloggers have commented that a world-class city like San Francisco, which depends on tourism, can always use another museum. Others have said that the Fishers should collaborate with and support existing museums.

This issue is much broader than the specifics surrounding the Fisher museum. According to a CAM survey, approximately 70 new museums will be established in California by 2010. New museums are in development in small and large communities across California. What impact will these new museums have on existing museums? Will new museums compete for donors, visitors, and members? Or, will new museums help leverage more public and private support for all museums and encourage communities to embrace all cultural institutions?
