CCHE BOARD TO DETERMINE ROUND THREE GRANT RECIPIENTS

The California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) Board will meet on August 22 and 23, 2007 in Sacramento to hear presentations from over 60 grant finalists for the Endowment's third round of Proposition 40 bond funds. The CCHE Board grouped organizations into divisions so that the organizations would compete amongst entities with similar budgets. Also in this second third of distributions, two types of applications were accepted: Project Grants for capital projects and Planning Grants for planning activities related to capital projects.

At the conclusion of the 2-day meeting, the Board will reserve approximately $43 million for the finalists for both project and Project and Planning Grants. To access the meeting agenda and review the list of finalists awarded, see http://www.library.ca.gov/grants/cche/index.html.

NEW LAW ALLOWS SMALL WINERIES TO DONATE AND POUR AT NONPROFIT EVENTS

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed AB 323 (Evans) into law, a bill that will help nonprofit organizations obtain more wine donations and provide winetasting at events. AB 323 enables the increasing number of vintners operating under the license combination "17" (beer and wine wholesaler) and "20" (off-sale beer and wine retailer) issued by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to donate and pour their wines alongside wineries at charitable fundraisers. Before this law passed, only wineries with an "02" license from ABC could donate and pour their wines at non-profit fundraising events. The new law is effective immediately. For additional information, see http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_323&sess=CUR&house=B&author=evans.

CAM's lobbyist, Kathryn Lynch, has been involved in this statewide effort to help ease restrictions and make it easier for small wine companies and nonprofits to work together. New policies from the Alcohol Beverage Control pertaining to nonprofits will also be forthcoming in the near future.

CAM MEMBERS ELECT NEW OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS

One of the benefits of membership is the opportunity to vote for CAM's Board of Directors and officers. We are pleased to announce the following members who were elected to the CAM Board of Directors last month:

CAM members also elected new officers who started their terms in July:

CAM is governed by dynamic and active board members who take their role in serving the museum field very seriously. With the vote of the membership, CAM's 23 board members are elected to represent the diversity of the California museum field in terms of region, budget size, and discipline. For a complete list of CAM's current board members, please visit http://www.calmuseums.org/about/board.html.

MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: PROGRAMS FOR LATINO AUDIENCES

CAM has added a new and interactive feature to CAM e-News! Every month, CAM will host a poll for newsletter recipients on a "hot topic" pertaining to our state's museums. Participation in the poll is optional and respondents may remain anonymous if they wish. The results from the previous month's poll will be featured in CAM e-News. So, we encourage you to give us your opinion!

On July 29, 2007, the San Jose Mercury News wrote that "for the first time in modern history, most of the babies being born in California are Latino" with Latina mothers giving birth to 51.5 percent of all babies born in 2005 (see http://www.mercurynews.com/search/ci_6492635). The author claims that these newborns "are the leading edge of a Latino demographic surge that will remake the state in unknown ways during the coming decades." CAM would like to know how museums see themselves in the changing California landscape.

Will your museum offer programs in the next five years specifically for Latino audiences?
