| CTTC REQUESTS PRESS RELEASE INFORMATION ON CULINARY, CULTURE, AND WHALE WATCHING EVENTS |
The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) is accepting submissions for press releases that will detail three specific themes. The CTTC is currently drafting its Best Events 2008 news releases: The first release will highlight a growing trend, culinary tourism, and will promote large food and wine events and festivals throughout the state (total attendees must be at least 10,000). The second release will be promoting film, arts and cultural events in a separate news release (total attendees must be at least 10,000). The deadline for these two news release items is July 20. The CTTC is also seeking press release information on whale watching, which includes whale watching festivals, unique cruises and educational programs. The deadline for these submissions is July 27. All submissions must be via the official form, available by email through Sam Caygill, Media Relations Manager, at scaygill@cttc1.com. Any other submissions will not be accepted. | PSAS HIGHLIGHTING IMPORTANCE OF THE ARTS FOR KIDS NOW AVAILABLE |
The California Arts Council (CAC) has published a public service announcement (PSA) entitled "Kids Come Alive with the Arts," an animated 30-second spot featuring voice-over by actor and CAC member Annette Bening. The CAC has announced that the PSA can be sent directly to television and cable stations via DVD. PreservationDirectory.com has officially launched its newest resource: the "Preservation Blog". The Preservation Blog serves as a collection of "mini-blogs" that present articles and news items in a wide variety of topics under the umbrella of historic and cultural resource preservation. The goal of the site is to build a public repository of articles, notices, and press releases on a wide variety of topics of value to the preservation community, including restoration techniques, the historic nomination process, museum exhibitions and news, preservation legislation, historic travel and heritage trip ideas, and endangered or threatened historic sites and homes. FAMILY LEARNING FORUM ANNOUNCES WEBSITE LAUNCH
The Family Learning Forum, presented by the USS Constitution Museum in Boston, has relaunched its project website. The goal of the project is to help museums of all sizes better serve their present and future family audiences. The website is a forum to explore the topic of family learning in museums and report the findings of its research study. O’NEILL FOUNDATION OFFERS BOARD OR STAFF DEVELOPMENT GRANTS TO SAN FRANCISCO ORGANIZATIONS
The O’Neill Foundation is offering Capacity Building Program Grants to nonprofit organizations who operate in San Francisco, as well as a handful of other communities across the United States. The grant supports activities that develop or improve the effectiveness of the organization’s board of trustees, leadership, strategic plan, staff, and programs. Proposals can include, but are not limited to: evaluation, organizational development, strategic planning, assessment, program development, and human resource training. GOOGLE OFFERS FREE SOFTWARE TO NONPROFIT GROUPS
Google has announced that it is making the educational version of its Google Apps product available free to nonprofit organizations in the United States, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The collection of communication and collaboration tools includes e-mail and calendar programs, Internet-based telephone and text-messaging services, and word-processing, spreadsheet, and Web-publishing applications. Google charges businesses $50 a year for the tools and services. More information about Google Apps is available on the Google website at http://www.google.com/a/npo.
FUNDING INCREASE FOR NEA APPROVED BY CONGRESS
The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) has announced that Members of Congress approved a $35.6 million increase in funds for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) on June 27. The increase puts the NEA’s budget at a total $160 million for the 2008 fiscal year. The bill defeated three amendments targeted at eliminating or cutting funds. Focus has now shifted to the Senate, where the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved its version of the Department of Interior funding bill with an increase in the NEA budget of $9 million over the 2007 level, to $133 million. The proposals from each house will be considered over the next few months for the final NEA appropriations for fiscal year 2008 (starting in October 2007). CAN OFFERS FUNDRAISING WORKSHOPS FOR INDIVIDUALS AND BOARD MEMBERS
The California Association of Nonprofits is co-sponsoring a workshop with Benevon which is aimed at introducing board members, volunteers, and staff to the Benevon Model for individual fundraising. This model is designed to both reconnect individuals with their initial passion and train them to use that passion to speak powerfully about the work of their organizations. With the skills learned in this workshop, participants will be able to successfully tell their organization's story in a way that effectively engages individual donors. Workshops will be held in three California cities in the upcoming months: the Santa Barbara workshop will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 25. The Long Beach workshop will take place from 1:00 - 4:00 on Thursday, July 26. The Sacramento workshop will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 on Thursday, September 6. ARTS REACH PRESENTS ITS 2007 NATIONAL ARTS MARKETING CONFERENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO
Arts Reach has announced its 2007 National Arts Marketing Conference, Cultural Entrepreneurship Best Practices: Building Bridges to New Audiences and Donors. FOUNDATION CENTER LAUNCHES MULTIMEDIA EVENTS ARCHIVE WEBSITE
The Foundation Center has announced the launch of its new online Events Archive website, which provides free access to Foundation Center events and other resources recorded in a variety of formats. Grantseekers, nonprofit organizations, and others interested in the field of philanthropy can now view videos and webcasts, listen to or download audio recordings, and read transcripts of selected events. While many of these programs have been available at the Center’s regional offices, this is the first time for events to be captured and made available for free online. ARTIST DONATION TAX DEDUCTION BILLS CONTINUE TO GAIN SUPPORT
The Artist-Museum Partnership Act (commonly known as the 'Artist Deduction bill') has been gaining co-sponsors since it was re-introduced earlier this year. The House bill H.R. 1524 introduced by Reps. John Lewis (D-GA) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) now has 50 co-sponsors. Additionally, the Senate bill S. 548 introduced by Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Robert Bennett (R- UT) has 23 co-sponsors. The legislation supports individual artists by allowing them to take a fair-market value tax deduction for tangible works they donate to nonprofit collecting and educational organizations. NEH GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRESERVATION AND ACCESS
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is offering three upcoming grant opportunities pertaining to preservation and collections. Grants to Preserve and Create Access to Humanities Collections (deadline: July 25) support projects that preserve collections and create intellectual access to collections that, because of their intellectual content and value as cultural artifacts, are considered highly important for research, education, and public programming in the humanities. Planning Grants for Interpreting America's Historic Places (deadline: September 12) may be used by organizations to develop in detail the content, interpretive approach, and specific components of projects prior to implementation. Grants for Stabilizing Humanities Collections (deadline: October 2) help museums, libraries, archives, and historical organizations preserve their humanities collections through support for improved housing and storage, environmental conditions, security, lighting, and fire protection. IRVINE FOUNDATION NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR “INVESTING IN ARTISTS” GRANTS
The James Irvine Foundation is currently accepting applications for its “Investing in Artists” grant program. The program provides grants in two categories: “Artistic Equipment and Tools”, and “Presenting and Marketing Work.” After three rounds of funding, planning grants of up to $5,000 and implementation grants up to $15,000 will be awarded to California artists over a two-year period in 2007 and 2008. CAPTAIN PLANET FOUNDATION OFFERS YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION GRANTS
The Captain Planet Foundation is accepting applications for the next rounds of its Environmental Youth Programs, which supports interactive programming that promotes the understanding of environmental issues in children and young adults, ages 6-18. The intention of this program is to engage youth in resolving environmental problems in their community. Applications must be submitted by September 30 or December 31 to be considered for the upcoming rounds of funding. SAN DIEGO REPORT ILLUSTRATES ART’S POSITIVE IMPACT
The City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, the San Diego Regional Arts and Culture Coalition, and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders have released the Fiscal Year ‘06 report detailing the impact of arts on the local San Diego economy. The report underlines the business revenue of the 82 organizations that are funded by the city. The report found that, after spending $132.2 million in 2006, these 82 organizations generated $442 million back into the economy, including hotel expenditures. San Diego officials say the results show why funding the arts is so important and highlights the Commission for Arts and Culture’s value to the City. WMA’s 2007 ANNUAL MEETING REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
The Western Museums Association will be hosting its 2007 Annual Meeting, Shake it Up: Museums Activate and Innovate, in Oakland on October 10 - 14. NEH ACCEPTING PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION GRANTS AT TWO ANNUAL DEADLINES IN 2008
Beginning in 2008, the Division of Public Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will accept both Planning and Implementation Grant applications at two annual deadlines: January 23, 2008 and August 27, 2008. New Planning Grant guidelines are now available on the NEH web site (http://www.neh.gov) and applications will be accepted on September 5, 2007. New Implementation Grant guidelines will be posted on the NEH web site in the fall. Libraries, museums, and historical organizations undertaking projects that need planning or implementation funds are encouraged to call the NEH Division of Public Programs at (202) 606-8267 and speak to a program officer.
GORMAN’S 2007 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLICITY GUIDES NOW AVAILABLE
Vdahl Enterprises has announced the publication of Gorman’s 2007 Northern California Publicity Guides, which list contact information and advertising rates for over 375 Northern California publications. 3M COMMUNITY GIVING GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL EDUCATION

IMLS REQUESTS PROPOSALS TO STUDY INTERNET ACCESS, RELATED SERVICES AT NATION’S PUBLIC LIBRARIES
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is inviting proposals for examining the social value of free access to computers, the Internet, and related services at the nation's public libraries. The awardee will examine the impact of free access to the Internet and computers on the social, economic, personal, professional well-being for individuals, families, and communities. The deadline to apply is September 14. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NPI-SPONSORED SEMINARS NOW AVAILABLE
Scholarships for stewardship training in historic preservation are available to individuals and organizations from the National Preservation Institute (NPI) to attend NPI-sponsored seminars to will be held across the country through December 2007. Seminars in California include: Conflict Resolution and Negotiation Tools for Cultural and Natural Resource Projects, to be held September 25 – 27 in San Simeon; NAGPRA and ARPA: Applications and Requirements, to be held October 10 – 11 in Sacramento; and, Section 106: An Introduction, to be held October 17 – 19 in San Diego. NEH SUMMER STIPENDS PROGRAM DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 2
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is again offering its Summer Stipends Program, which supports full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months for individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools. NEH ANNOUNCES NEW GRANT FOR TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS IN HUMANITIES
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced a new category of grants that will offer up to $1 million for the implementation of major traveling exhibitions that present significant topics in the humanities. CAN HOSTING NONPROFIT ACCOUNTING BOOT CAMPS IN AUGUST, SEPTEMBER
The California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) will be hosting its Nonprofit Accounting Boot Camp in three California cities in the upcoming months. The bootcamp will cover the essentials of accounting in a nonprofit environment. The course will begin with an overview of what it means to be a nonprofit and to do functional accounting in that context, then move into specific areas that are often problematic to nonprofit finance managers and accountants, including cost allocation, accounting for donations, preparing for an audit, preventing fraud and more. The workshop will be held in Humboldt on Tuesday, August 7; Oakland on Wednesday, September 19; and, Palm Desert on Thursday, September 25. NEA RELEASES REPORT ON VOLUNTEERS WITH ARTS AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
A new report from the National Endowment for the Arts' (NEA) Research & Analysis staff focuses on arts volunteering in the United States. More than 1.6 million Americans volunteered with arts or cultural organizations in 2005. In contrast to volunteers with other types of organizations, arts volunteers are older, better educated, and more giving of their time. More than 7 million Americans, meanwhile, provided free artistic services to non-arts groups such as schools or churches. NEH OFFERING GRANTS FOR ABRAHAM LINCOLN TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is accepting applications for its Abraham Lincoln Traveling Exhibitions grant, which supports an organization interested and able to develop and tour nationally a panel exhibition on the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln and to develop and publish supplementary educational materials to be distributed to each of the exhibition’s host sites. CAL FIRE OFFERING OPEN EXAM FOR STATE ARCHEOLOGIST CLASSIFICATION
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has released an examination announcement for the State Associate State Archeologist classification. This will be an open exam, available for any qualified candidate. This is a rare chance to take this exam through the CAL FIRE department. TOURISM CARES ANNOUNCES GRANT PROGRAM FOR NONPROFITS
Tourism Cares has announced its Worldwide Grant Program, which supports the capital improvements or programs of tourism-related nonprofit organizations. Preference will be given to initiatives and program proposals that focus on: capital improvements that serve to protect, restore, or conserve sites of exceptional cultural, historic, or natural significance; and/or the education of local host communities and the traveling public about conservation and preservation of sites of exceptional cultural, historical, or natural significance. NEA OFFERS VISUAL ARTS TOURING GRANTS
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is accepting applications for its American Masterpieces: Visual Arts Touring grants, which celebrate the extraordinary and rich evolution of the visual arts in the United States. Through the creation and touring of major exhibitions, art of the highest quality will be made available across the nation. The deadline to apply for this grant is September 21. ACADEMY OF AMERICAN POETS HAS REDESIGNED ITS ONLINE NATIONAL POETRY GUIDE
The Academy of American Poets has expanded and redesigned its interactive National Poetry Map, which highlights local poets and historical landmarks, as well as festivals, conferences, literary journals and presses, bookstores, and writing programs. CALAA TO OFFICIALLY CLOSE ITS DOORS
Ellen Estilai, the final board chair of the California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies (CALAA), sent out a letter to the arts community earlier this month, announcing that the group is officially closing its doors. The final paragraph of the letter mentions, “Please know that the CALAA Board had been involved in several strategic planning sessions with the Board of California Arts Advocates to further strengthen statewide arts advocacy prior to making the decision to dissolve. It is hoped that a new organization and network will be created to serve the interests of local arts agencies, arts organizations and artists across the state, developed collectively with other members of the field.”
CISCO FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS TO BAY AREA NONPROFITS
The Cisco Foundation, the charitable arm of computer networking giant Cisco Systems, has announced grants totaling nearly $1.4 million to ninety-two Bay Area nonprofits. This year's grants focused on two of the foundation's funding priorities: educational opportunities and classroom innovation, and heath-related programs for underserved communities.
