| IMLS SELECTS FOUR CALIFORNIA REPRESENTATIVES FOR ITS NATIONAL CONSERVATION SUMMIT |
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is convening Connecting to Collections: The National Conservation Summit in order to underscore the perils faced by museum and library collections and promote solutions for saving them. The Connecting to Collections summit will be held June 27 and 28, 2007, in Washington, DC. The 350 participants in the summit will include over 200 representatives of small and medium-sized museums and libraries from every state. At the summit, they will be joined by national leaders in conservation, government officials, and leaders in private sector support for conservation. CAM would like to recognize the four California representatives who were invited to attend this event: Jim DeMersman, from the Hayward Area Historical Society in Hayward; Kim Bui-Burton from the Monterey City Library in Monterey; William Michael from the Mono County Free Library in Mammoth Lakes; and Suellen Cheng from the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles. For more information about the summit, see http://www.heritagepreservation.org/C2C/.
| CTTC INVITES SUBMISSIONS FOR WHAT'S NEW IN CALIFORNIA |
The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) is now accepting submissions for it’s What’s New in California publication, a quarterly round-up of new happenings in California. Appropriate items for consideration include new museums, major renovations, museum exhibitions, and major public programs. The deadline to receive submissions for the Fall edition is July 13. | MUSEUMS AND BONDS - A HOT TOPIC IN THE NEWS AND IN THE LEGISLATURE |
Over the last couple weeks, the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets have focused their attention on aspects of Proposition 84, the Clean Water, Parks and Coastal Protection Bond. This voter-approved bond includes $100 million for nature education and mentions natural history museums, aquariums, and botanical gardens as potential recipients of these funds. The editorials and columns in the Los Angeles Times claim that state legislators will be directing funds from Proposition 84 to support specific projects and museums in lieu of a competitive grant process. In response to this claim, readers had very negative reactions, writing that they would never "vote for a bond issue again."
As the statewide museum association, CAM has requested that the legislature establish a competitive grants program along national best practices to ensure that there is demonstrable public value delivered through these grants, transparency on all levels, and equity and access for all eligible museums. Any other process may jeopardize the passage of future bonds, especially those supporting the state’s cultural institutions. To read these editorials, columns, and letters to the editors, see the following links:
