MUSEUM LEADERS GET LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PUBLISHED FOR MUSEUM MONTH – “TRY IT!”

The 2007 California Museum Month Toolkit was mailed to all current CAM institutional and individual members in April and encouraged all museum leaders to send a letter to the editor of their local newspaper and meet with their elected officials. We are happy to report that this strategy is working! Jim DeMersman, Executive Director of the Hayward Area Historical Society, got a letter to the editor published in less than 24 hours in Inside Bay Area and had a successful meeting with a legislative representative. Lia Transue, Executive Director of the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, used the template provided by CAM and got a letter published in the Santa Rosa Democrat. Jolene Redvale, Curator of Education at the San Bernardino County Museum, also wrote a powerful article about the impact of museums (see Museums in the News below for the link). Jim wrote,

“I would encourage everyone to use the California Museum Month toolkit to promote your institution. Using the guidelines, the Hayward Area Historical Society got a Letter to the Editor published in the local paper and saw an immediate increase in visitation. In addition, using the template to write to our local legislators gave us feedback from the legislator's office and, in one case, a 35 minute meeting with our State Senator's chief of staff to talk about museums and our community. It’s simple, easy and effective. Try It!”

The sample letters and other materials are available on CAM’s website. Visit http://www.calmuseums.org/museum_month/index.html to learn more about California Museum Month and to download these resources.

CAM BOARD MEMBERS TO PRESENT PRESIDENT’S AWARD TO TWO STATE LEGISLATORS

Two prominent California elected officials, Senator Alan Lowenthal and Assemblymember Pedro Nava, will be presented with CAM’s 2007 President’s Award in recognition of their support of California Museums in the next couple weeks. Recipients of the CAM President’s Award are elected officials in California State government who are serving a term in office at the time of their nomination. A handful of recipients are selected each year because they have shown past evidence of support for California Museums, demonstrated a continuing commitment to museums in California, have shown publicly their support of museums in their local district and/ or made contact with other legislators on behalf of California museums and the issues affecting them. Kate Davies, CAM Board Member and Executive Director of the Downey Museum of Art, will present Senator Alan Lowenthal with the President’s Award on Saturday, May 12th in conjunction with a family and children’s festival. Assemblymember Nava will receive his award at the Santa Barbara Zoo on Friday, May 18th by CAM President Richard Block, CEO/Director of the Santa Barbara Zoo. Additional information will be provided in future editions of CAM e-News.

REPORT WARNS OF ART LEADERSHIP GAP AS BOOMERS RETIRE

The report, Involving Youth in Nonprofit Arts Organizations: A Call to Action, argues that the problem is being driven by a shrinking pool of young people positioned to succeed current staff, increased competition for arts organizations' services, and a lack of attention to generational succession issues. ARTS POLICY ROUNDTABLE RAISES CONCERNS OVER ARTS GIVING
Americans for the Arts and the Sundance Preserve have announced recommendations from the first annual National Arts Policy Roundtable, convened last fall to address the decline of arts philanthropy and the future of private sector giving to the arts, reports the Foundation Center. Research conducted by Americans for the Arts suggests that nonprofit arts groups are experiencing a major shift in support. Since 1992, the arts portion of philanthropic giving has dropped from 8.4 percent to 5.2 percent — roughly $8 billion annually. Because arts organizations in the U.S. currently derive 43 percent of their revenue from private contributions, further declines in giving to the arts could dramatically alter the nonprofit cultural landscape. To read the full Foundation Center report, visit http://foundationcenter.org/pnd/news/story.jhtml?id=176700010.
