| CCHE EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR CALL FOR REVIEWERS |
The California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE), is interested in working with individuals who are willing to dedicate their expertise and time to serve on a panel to review grant applications and to provide comments and advise the CCHE staff. The deadline for CCHE’s third round of funding is March 1, 2007 (see http://www.library.ca.gov/CCHE/index.cfm). Individuals who have experience and expertise working with or who are knowledgeable about a particular period or aspect of California culture, architecture and history, who are available on the day(s) when the panel will meet in May 2007, and who can provide a fair and knowledgeable assessment of the information will be asked to review. Reviewers will be screened for conflicts of interest with grant applicants. Individuals selected to serve as a panelist for CCHE will receive compensation of $500/day.
The deadline for submission of Reviewer Solicitation Forms is now open-ended; CCHE will continue to accept forms until further notice. For additional information on the eligibility requirements and to download the application, click on “Reviewer Solicitation Form” at http://www.library.ca.gov/CCHE/Round3.cfm.
| AAM CALL TO ACTION ON FEDERAL FUNDING INCREASES |
The American Association of Museums (AAM) recently sent out a call to action to the museum field in support of a 25% increase in grants for museums. Across the board, the primary federal agencies – IMLS, NEA, NEH, NSF – that fund museum grants fared better than most domestic spending programs in the President's FY 2008 budget proposal submitted to Congress this week. For more detailed information, see AAM's call to action at http://www.magnetmail.net/actions/email_web_version.cfm?recipient_id=15406937&message_id=270265&user_id=Museum.
"AAM will need the support of Museum Advocacy Team and the entire museum field to make the case to Congress," reports AAM. "We need our community to speak up for IMLS funding or we risk losing an opportunity to secure significant additional new grant funds for museums, especially as the media focuses attention on the cuts proposed for a number of health, education, housing and other domestic programs."

NEH CONSULTATION GRANT PROGRAM DISCONTINUED
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will no longer offer consultation grants for museums, historical organizations, or libraries in their earliest stages of development. Applications for consultation grants submitted by the September 2006 deadline are currently under review, and NEH will announce the final round of awards in this category in March 2007. The Endowment expects to modify its guidelines for the planning grant category to broaden the types of early-stage activities eligible for NEH support. Revised planning grant guidelines will be on the NEH Web site (http://www.neh.gov) in the early summer, and applications will be accepted in September. Libraries, museums, and historical organizations undertaking projects that need planning funds are encouraged to call the NEH Division of Public Programs (202-606-8267) and speak to a program officer.
REPORT SCRUTINIZES SMITHSONIAN SALARIES
A report by the Smithsonian Institution’s acting inspector general raised concerns about the museum’s pay practices, noting that 19 top executives were paid higher salaries than the vice president of the United States, reports The Washington Post. While many of the museum’s employees are paid based on a government scale, other salaries are paid out of a fund from private donations and thus can exceed government caps. To read the complete article, see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/30/AR2007013001854.html.

IRS PANEL CONSIDERS PLAN TO ENCOURAGE NONPROFIT GROUPS TO DISCLOSE ERRORS
According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, an Internal Revenue Service advisory committee is seeking feedback from charity lawyers and other officials on whether the tax agency should create a new self-regulation program for tax-exempt organizations. The effort would give nonprofit officials a way to disclose errors or instances of wrongdoing in the hopes of receiving a lesser punishment for the offense than if the IRS had discovered the problems.
