| CALIFORNIANS VOTE YES ON PROPOSITION 84 WHICH INCLUDES SUPPORT FOR MUSEUMS’ CONSERVATION PROGRAMS |
Earlier this month Californians voted 53.8% to 46.2% in favor of passing Proposition 84, the Clean Water, Parks and Coastal Protection Act, a $5.4 billion bond measure which primarily funds clean water, flood control, and conservation projects. Proposition 84 will also provide $100 million for nature education and research facilities, including natural history museums, aquariums, and botanical gardens. Grants from this proposition will be used for buildings, structures, and exhibit galleries that present the collections to inspire and educate the public and for marine wildlife conservation research equipment and facilities.
CAM, in addition to a number of museums and aquariums across the state, signed on as a supporter of Proposition 84. More than 700 organizations and opinion leaders supported Proposition 84, the largest coalition of any measure on the November 2006 ballot. CAM encouraged the passage of this bond to provide funds to California’s cultural institutions in fulfilling their roles as educational and research facilities. For additional information about Proposition 84 or to view a list of the museum supporters, visit http://www.voterguide.ss.ca.gov/props/prop84/argue_rebutt84.html.

| AAM RELEASES 2006 MUSEUM FINANCIAL INFORMATION SURVEY |
The American Association of Museums (AAM) released 2006 Museum Financial Information, a comprehensive survey of museums diverse in size, type, and location. The publication presents a financial snapshot of 800 museums from fiscal year 2003 through 2005 and includes information from over 250 museums that reported six years of performance. The results indicate that the nation's museums have demonstrated significant resilience to economic challenges over the past few years.
A leading survey finding indicates that national museum attendance is holding steady with U.S. museums receiving over 600 million visits annually. Museums continue to rely more heavily on private funding, and less on government funding, than they did a decade ago and overall financial stability is increasing according to the AAM survey findings. Capital campaigns and building projects continue apace with almost one quarter of U.S. museums engaged in a capital fund-raising campaign, with a median goal of $10 million. Half of museums surveyed have begun or completed building construction, renovation or expansion in the past three years.
The complete 2006 Museum Financial Information survey is available to preorder at AAM's online bookstore, http://www.aam-us.org/bookstore, or by calling toll free (877) AAM-3034. Costs range from $45 for AAM members to $55 for non-AAM members.
