| EDWARD ABLE TO BE PRESENTED CAMMY AWARD DURING 2007 CAM CONFERENCE IN LONG BEACH |
Edward Able, former President and CEO of the American Association of Museums, has accepted CAM’s nomination for the CAMMY Award, to be presented during the 2007 CAM Conference in Long Beach, California. The CAMMY Award recognizes extraordinary museum supporters, professionals, and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to California museums. Richard Block, the President of CAM’s Board of Directors, will present the award to Edward Able via satellite at the CAMMY Luncheon on Thursday, February 22, 2007.
The CAMMY Luncheon will also host a vibrant presentation by Marjorie Schwarzer, Chair, Department of Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley and author of Riches, Rivals & Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in America. Schwarzer will take attendees for a tour through the decades, when museums transformed themselves from cabinets of curiosity to centers of civic pride and prestige. All delegates of the conference are encouraged to attend.

| CCHE ROUND THREE PROJECT AND PLANNING GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE |
The California Culture and Historical Endowment (CCHE) is soliciting applications for round three project and planning grants. During this, the last scheduled round of funding, $43 million will be available to eligible applicants for capital assets projects and planning grants that illustrate the diverse and outstanding stories of California.
CCHE is a state agency created by legislation in 2002. Grants support projects that help to preserve and demonstrate: culturally significant aspects of life during various periods of California history including architecture, economic activities, art, recreation, and transportation; unique identifiable ethnic and other communities that have added significant elements to California’s culture; California industrial, commercial, and military history including the industries, technologies, and commercial activities that have characterized California’s economic expansion and California’s contribution to national defense; and, important paleontologic, oceanographic, and geologic sites and specimens.

| CAM/CERA PRESENT AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP IN LOS ANGELES ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14 |
CAM and the California Exhibition Resources Alliance (CERA) are presenting a one-day audience development workshop for California museum professionals at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday, November 14, from 10am to 4pm. The workshop will be taught by Margaret Kadoyama, a community involvement specialist. Workshop participants will learn about and understand their current and potential audiences and provide tools to approach new audiences strategically. Attendees will create a work-plan for audience development, including setting goals, developing strategies to attain goals, and measuring the results.
Over 30 museum professionals participated in the Northern California audience development workshop held at the Oakland Museum of California on October 23. This workshop is supported in part by the James Irvine Foundation and the host museum.
The registration fee is $50 for CAM members and $75 for nonmembers, and includes workshop participation, materials and resources, and a boxed lunch. | CAM CONFERENCE PROGRAM AVAILABLE AND REGISTRATION NOW OPEN |
CAM is pleased to announce that the final program schedule is now available and registration is open for Charting a Course: New Models for Times of Change, the next statewide museum conference in Long Beach, California, February 21-24, 2007. Like 2006, this conference will bring together a diverse group of museum professionals from across California for a stimulating and enjoyable exchange of ideas, perspectives, and resources. Long Beach's waterfront will be the backdrop for a notable conference with the newly expanded Museum of Latin American Art, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Long Beach Museum of Art hosting evening events.

2006 CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS SALARY SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE
CAM’s 2006 California Museums Survey: A Statistical Report and Salary Survey of California Museums is now available. This detailed study includes a 40+ page publication and accompanying CD. Contents include: statistics about California museums, including governance structure, membership, programs, collections, admissions, and attendance; financial data, such as revenue sources and personnel expenses; information about staff members, volunteers, and board members by race, gender, and disability status; average benefits and recruitment practices of museums; salary ranges for 63 positions found in California museums; and, detailed financial and personnel reports by organizational budget size. All institutional members have been mailed a complimentary copy as part of their CAM membership benefits. Institutions that participated in the survey in 2005 will receive coupons for 50% off the full price of their first ordered copy. CERA RECEIVES IMLS 21ST CENTURY MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM GRANT AWARD
CAM congratulates the California Exhibition Resources Alliance (CERA) for receiving an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) 21st Century Museum Professionals program grant for its Sing Me Your Story Community Connections Project. CERA is one of nine grantees in the country to receive this grant and is the only California recipient. With this grant, staff members of small museums will be engaged in community involvement training based on the installation of the CERA exhibition Sing Me Your Story, Dance Me Home: Art & Poetry from Native California. JAMES IRVINE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES ARTS REGIONAL INITIATIVE INCLUDING FOUR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS
The James Irvine Foundation recently announced the launch of the Arts Regional Initiative with more than $4 million in grants to 12 arts institutions outside California's major urban areas. These organizations provide access to quality arts programming, but many are vulnerable to government and private funding cutbacks. Through this initiative, granted organizations are focusing on financial sustainability, growth capacity, and increasing audience participation from diverse communities. Future phases of this multiyear initiative are planned for other regions of the state, including the Central Valley, Los Angeles County, and the Central Coast. CCH GUIDELINES FOR 2007 CALIFORNIA STORY FUND NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
The guidelines for the California Council for the Humanities’ (CCH) California Story Fund are now available. The Council will award competitive grants of up to $10,000 twice a year for public humanities programs that bring to light compelling stories from California's diverse communities and provide opportunities for collective reflection and public discussion. CAN OFFERS FREE HOLIDAY FUNDRAISING COACHING CONFERENCE CALL ON NOVEMBER 15
The California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) and Benevon (formerly Raising More Money) will host a free fundraising training for the fall fundraising season. The training will be held on Wednesday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. PST. The call is open to all staff, volunteers and board members of CAN’s nonprofit members. SAM HAM, PH.D. TO SPEAK AT INTERPRETATION WORKSHOP JANUARY 11 AND 12, 2007
The Placer County Museums Association will host a two-day workshop with Sam Ham, Ph.D., in Auburn on January 11 and 12, 2007. The workshop will cover subjects such as interpretation and its role in museum and park management, how to develop new ideas for enhanced interpretive programs and services, and explain the importance of taking a thematic approach in interpretation programs. VSA ARTS ANNOUNCES ARTS CONNECT ALL GRANT AWARDS FOR ARTS ORGANIZATIONS IN SD, LA AND SF
VSA arts and MetLife Foundation have announced Arts Connect All inclusive educational program grant opportunities for arts organizations in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. VSA arts is an international nonprofit organization founded to create a society where all people with disabilities learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts. This funding opportunity encourages arts organizations to create or enhance multi-session, inclusive education programs by strengthening partnerships with local public schools. A maximum of ten awards of up to $15,000 will be given to winning organizations. Application packets must be received by VSA arts by Monday, December 11, 2006. NEW REPORT REVEALS CULTURAL GROWTH AND MUSEUM USEAGE OF ORANGE COUNTY
The first Orange County Cultural Indicators Report was released last week at a gathering of community leaders in Orange County. It is a joint project of Arts Orange County and the Orange County Community Foundation and is designed to create a more holistic way of measuring the growth and progress of the county's cultural sector over time. The study examined: the perceptions and cultural practices of Orange County residents; the nonprofit arts sector; the cultural life of Orange County cities; and, arts education in Orange County. NEH GRANT AVAILABLE FOR ORGANIZATIONS INTERPRETING AMERICA’S HISTORIC PLACES
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is offering implementation grants for institutions that are interpreting America’s historic places. Implementation grants enable organizations to install new or enhanced interpretive programs at places of significance in American history or culture. Projects may interpret a single historic site or house, a series of sites, an entire neighborhood, a town or community, or a larger geographical region. AMERICAN ARCHITECTURAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2007 ACCENT ON ARCHITECTURE COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM
The American Architectural Foundation (AAF) announces the 2007 Accent on Architecture Community Grants program to support projects specifically targeted to teach children about architecture and design. AAF educates individuals and communities about the power of architecture to transform lives and improve the places where we live, learn, work, and play. Accent on Architecture Community Grant projects should illustrate an increased awareness, appreciation, and understanding of architecture and design among students in the K-12 age range. The foundation is especially interested in programs targeting underserved populations. Applications due December 15, 2006. THE URBAN INSTITUTE RELEASES MONOGRAPH EXAMINING NONPROFIT CULTURAL HERITAGE ORGANIZATIONS
The Urban Institute has released a report entitled, Cultural Heritage Organizations: Nonprofits That Support Traditional, Ethnic, Folk, and Noncommercial Popular Culture. This monograph examines the structure, finances, and programs of U.S. nonprofit cultural heritage organizations. Among its findings, the report notes that the groups are fundamentally community-oriented and offer a broad range of programs for diverse audiences, but that they also tend to be small and lack the resources of other nonprofit arts and humanities organizations. This monograph provides an overview of nonprofit cultural heritage organizations in the United States and a snapshot of their structure, finances and programs. FOUNDATION CENTER RELEASES REPORT PROVIDING COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF CALIFORNIA FOUNDATIONS
The Foundation Center, in collaboration with The Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy at the University of Southern California, has produced California Foundations: An Update on the State's Grantmaking Community. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of private and community foundations in California. According to the report, estimated giving by California foundations rose in 2005 to a record $4.11 billion, and a survey of leading foundations projects that their giving will grow faster in 2006.
