| CAM NOW TAKING PREORDERS FOR 2006 CA MUSEUMS SALARY SURVEY |
Preorders are now being accepted for the 2006 California Museums Survey: A Statistical Report and Salary Survey of California Museums and will be made available for shipment the week of October 25. This detailed study includes a 40+ page publication and accompanying CD. Contents include: statistics about California museums, including governance structure, membership, programs, collections, admissions, and attendance; financial data, such as revenue sources and personnel expenses; information about staff members, volunteers, and board members by race, gender, and disability status; average benefits and recruitment practices of museums; salary ranges for 63 positions found in California museums; and, detailed financial and personnel reports by organizational budget size.
All institutional members will receive a complimentary copy as part of their CAM membership benefits. Institutions that participated in the survey in 2005 will receive coupons for 50% off the full price of their first ordered copy. Regular cost per copy: $60 nonmembers / $30 members / $10 for individual salary reports. | 2007 CONSERVATION ASSESSMENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE |
The Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) is designed to help small to mid-sized museums of all types obtain a general assessment of the condition of their collections. Following an on-site assessment by a conservation professional, the museum receives a written report recommending priorities to improve collections care, staff education, long-range and emergency plans, and fundraising. The FY 2007 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) applications were mailed on Friday, October 6, 2006, to museums on the CAP mailing list and are also available on Heritage Preservation’s Web site at www.heritagepreservation.org. The postmark deadline for applications is December 1, 2006. Eligible participants will be accepted into the program on a first-come, first-served basis.
CAM would like to congratulate the following California museums that were accepted in 2006: Museum of Jurassic Technology, Museum of Latin American Art, Monterey Museum of Art, American Museum of Ceramic Art, San Diego Aerospace Museum, Marin History Museum, and the Trinity County Historical Society. These organizations were among 110 museums in 39 states and the District of Columbia that were selected to participate in CAP. | ANNUAL CAM CONFERENCE PRELIMINARY PROGRAM AND REGISTRATION ACCESSIBLE ONLINE |
The preliminary program schedule is now available and registration is open for Charting a Course: New Models for Times of Change, CAM's next statewide museum conference in Long Beach, California, February 21-24, 2007. This conference will bring together a diverse group of museum professionals from across California for a stimulating and enjoyable exchange of ideas, perspectives, and resources. Long Beach's waterfront will be the backdrop for a notable conference with the newly expanded Museum of Latin American Art, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Long Beach Museum of Art hosting evening events.
Come early and participate in the diverse array of CAM’s pre-conference workshops and meetings. Whether you're a director, exhibit developer, collections manager, educator, or other museum professional, these sessions give you quality time to learn about specialty topics and provide great networking opportunities with fellow colleagues.

CAM and the California Exhibition Resources Alliance (CERA) are presenting an audience development workshop series for California museum professionals. These one-day workshops will be taught by Margaret Kadoyama, a community involvement specialist. The workshops will help participants learn about and understand their current and potential audiences and provide tools to approach new audiences strategically.
Attendees will create a work-plan for audience development, including setting goals, developing strategies to attain goals, and measuring the results. The workshops are supported in part by the James Irvine Foundation and the host museums. The registration fee is $50 for CAM members and $75 for nonmembers, which includes workshop participation, materials and resources, and a boxed lunch.

BUDGET PROPOSAL PREPARATION WORKSHOP TO BE HELD IN SAN FRANCISCO ON OCTOBER 13
The Foundation Center will present a Proposal Budgeting Workshop on October 13, 2006, in San Francisco. The class will cover components of detailed budgets and effective strategies for outlining organizational budget needs. This course is designed for beginners and fundraisers with limited budgeting experience. Enrollment fee is $195.00 per person, with discounts for additional registrations and courses within organizations. NATIONAL FISH AND WILDLIFE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES MORE FISH PARTNERSHIP FUND FOR COMMUNITY-BASED AQUATIC RESTORATION PROJECTS
The 47-state B.A.S.S. Federation Nation (http://www.bassmaster.com/federation) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)(http://www.nfwf.org) have announced a new partnership to launch a grant program called the More Fish Partnership Fund that will provide funding for community-based aquatic restoration projects involving volunteers, youth, and other anglers. The goal is to improve awareness about aquatic resources by supporting both grassroots capacity building and habitat conservation projects. Deadline to apply is November 1, 2006. REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE OCTOBER 2006 ART MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP DIRECTORS FORUM
The Art Museum Partnership is focused on facilitating the sharing of information, resources and collections among institutions of all sizes and types. The inaugural conference will be held in New York City on October 22 and 23, 2006. The weekend will begin with a reception and dinner at the historic National Arts Club sponsored by AXA Art, followed by two days of sessions at the American Folk Art Museum, Rubin Museum of Art and Dahesh Museum of Art. Guest speakers will explore a variety of subjects including disaster management, collaborations with consultants, and new audience development. Space is limited, early registration is encouraged. NSF ANNOUNCES INNOVATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE PROGRAM SOLICITATIONS
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is accepting proposals for its Innovation and Organizational Change Program. This program supports scientific research directed at advancing understanding of innovation and organizational phenomena. Proposals should advance scientific understanding of innovation and organizations and identify specifically the connection between the proposed research and fundamental problems in organizational design, organizational behavior, organizational effectiveness or innovation in organizations. CALL FOR PAPERS FOR VOLUME 2 OF MUSEUMS & SOCIAL ISSUES
Museums & Social Issues is currently accepting submissions for a new journal section that will feature short overviews of museum projects or exhibits that address social issues for Vol. 2 (1). Contributions should be brief (100-130 words) and accompanying photographs are welcome. The publication will select 8-12 submissions to appear in each issue. Possibilities include (but are not limited to): Digital privacy rights, GLBT-related issues, human rights, immigration, politics, and personal expression. Museums & Social Issues is a peer-reviewed journal published by Left Coast Press, Inc. (http://www.lcoastpress.com/index.php). The journal provides a forum for discourse about social issues and the engagement of museums in those issues. The deadline for submissions is October 20, 2006. CALIFORNIA INDIAN CONFERENCE SEEKING HOST INSTITUTIONS FOR 2007 AND 2008 CONFERENCES
The California Indian Conference (CIC) is looking for institutions to host the CIC conference in Fall of 2007 and 2008. Interested institutions should present a proposal at this year's CIC conference at Dominican University of California in San Rafael. Proposals should address a variety of logistical issues, such as the degree of support or financial resources of the proposer’s institution. The CIC encourages proposals from universities, tribes, or museums. Contact Lee Davis at davislee@sfsu.edu for specific requirements and specifications.
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SILICON VALLEY INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR ADVANCING THE ARTS INITIATIVE
The Community Foundation Silicon Valley's (CFSV) Advancing the Arts Initiative is designed to strengthen Silicon Valley arts organizations and build connections to the arts. To achieve the goals of the initiative, the CFSV will award grants to organizations that represent diverse geographies, budget sizes, and disciplines. A grant workshop that explains the guidelines is scheduled for October 17, 2006. Deadline to apply for the Advancing the Arts Initiative grant is January 8, 2007. IMLS MUSEUMS FOR AMERICA GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting grant applications to the agency’s FY 2007 Museums for America (MFA) grant program. MFA grant awards range from $5,000 and $150,000 and are intended to support projects that strengthen museums as active resources for lifelong learning and that foster active partnerships with their respective communities. MFA grants can be allocated to ongoing museum activities, research, planning, new activities and equipment purchases. Deadline to apply is November 15, 2006. METLIFE FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING GRANTS DUE OCTOBER 20
The MetLife Foundation has created a new initiative entitled Partnership for Intergenerational Learning for science and technology museums. In 2006, under this program, MetLife Foundation expects to award grants totaling $1 million. Projects should aim to reach large numbers of people of all ages in a cost-effective way and engage them in the excitement of learning. Collaboration and partnership with other organizations is a plus. Eligible applicants include U.S. science and technology museums that meet the following requirements: in existence for at least five years; member of Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC); and, a nonprofit organization.
