| PROPOSITION 84 ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT INCLUDES SUPPORT FOR MUSEUMS' CONSERVATION PROGRAMS |
In November, Californians will be asked to vote on several infrastructure bonds, ranging in issues from transportation and education to housing and disaster preparedness. As museum professionals, the proposition to watch is Proposition 84, the Clean Water, Parks and Coastal Protection Bond, a $5.4 billion bond measure which primarily funds clean water, flood control, and conservation projects. Proposition 84 also provides $100 million for nature education and research facilities, including natural history museums, aquariums, and botanical gardens. If Proposition 84 passes, grants will be used for buildings, structures, and exhibit galleries that present the collections to inspire and educate the public and for marine wildlife conservation research equipment and facilities.
CAM, in addition to a number of museums and aquariums across the state, has signed on as a supporter of Proposition 84 to encourage the passage of this bond and provide funds to our state’s cultural institutions in fulfilling their roles as educational and research facilities. For additional information about Proposition 84 or to view a list of the museum supporters, visit http://www.yeson84.com/.
| CAM HONORS ASSEMBLYMEMBER LAIRD WITH THE 2006 PRESIDENT'S AWARD |
In a brief ceremony yesterday at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, California Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) was given the 2006 CAM President’s Award for his support of the state’s museums and cultural institutions. Laird was chosen to receive the President’s Award in part because he introduced a resolution last February naming 2006 the Year of the California Museum. The California Legislature passed the bill and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed it, thus declaring 2006 as the Year of the California Museum. The resolution may be viewed at http://www.calmuseums.org/museum_month/ACR_119.pdf. CAM Board Members Beverly Smith, Vice President of Historical Services of Wells Fargo Bank, and David Dial, Vice President for Operations at the Computer History Museum, were in attendance to present the award as well as Julie Packard, Executive Director and Vice Chairman of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and CAM Executive Director Celeste DeWald.
Recipients of the President’s Award are elected officials in California state government who have demonstrated a commitment to museums in California and shown publicly their support of museums in their local district. For additional information or to view a photograph of the presentation, see http://www.calmuseums.org/news/legnews_2006_09.html.
