CALIFORNIA ARTS DAY WILL BE ON OCTOBER 6, 2006
This October 6, 2006, marks the sixth annual California Arts Day, slated as the first Friday in October. California Arts Day recognizes and celebrates the critical role that arts and creativity play in the state and promotes group participation in the arts. The theme this year? "Take 'Em to the Arts!" Built on the same concepts surrounding such annual events as "Take Your Child to Work" day, this year's California Arts Day encourages individuals to invite friends and family and attend arts events such as the theater, museums, galleries, dance performances, music events, and other arts and cultural activities. Arts organizations are encouraged to offer incentives on or around Friday, October 6, 2006 to correspond with California Arts Day and its "Take 'Em to the Arts" theme. Many organizations already have ongoing events and promotions for national Arts and Humanities Month in October. Arts organizations that are planning "Take 'Em to the Arts" promotions can email Mary Beth Barber at mbarber@caartscouncil.com.

PHILANTHROPIC GIVING INDEX SHOWS A MORE OPTIMISTIC FUTURE
The Philanthropic Giving Index is a semiannual study of the climate for charitable giving and fundraising in the United States. It is similar to the Consumer Confidence Index, but for charitable giving. In the Summer 2006 Philanthropic Giving Index (PGI) survey, fundraisers expressed a more optimistic opinion about the climate for fundraising than they have in the past year. Fundraisers’ views of the current and overall situation were slightly above those of the previous survey (December of 2005) and even more optimistic than they were one year ago. The report also includes data specific to subsectors, including arts and culture. To view the entire report, see http://www.philanthropy.iupui.edu/giving_fundraising_research.html#PGI.

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION OPENS DOORS WITH SMITHSONIAN AFFILIATIONS PROGRAM
For a $2,500 annual fee, museums can become Smithsonian "affiliates" and borrow artifacts. Currently, 146 museums and cultural organizations are part of the program, called Smithsonian Affiliations. The Smithsonian owns about 136 million objects, ninety-nine percent of which are in storage. Through the affiliates program, more than 7,000 have gone on the road in 10 years. The California Science Center in Los Angeles borrowed an Apollo command module from the National Air and Space Museum and meteorites from the National Museum of Natural History. The Smithsonian achieves one of its goals -- going beyond the Mall -- and builds better relationships with smaller museums. It also sends its specialists out for talks and consultations. Additionally, visitors to the affiliates receive a Smithsonian membership when they join the local institution, which means they get Smithsonian magazine (and boost its circulation).
