| AAMD RELEASES REPORT ON STEWARDSHIP AND ACQUISITION OF SACRED OBJECTS |
On August 9th, the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) published its “Report of the AAMD Subcommittee on the Acquisition and Stewardship of Sacred Objects,” which was endorsed at its Annual Meeting in June 2006. The new Report provides guidance regarding the acquisition, loan, handling, treatment, and interpretation of this special category of works.
The Report encourages museums to consider cases where it may be important to go beyond the law and adopt special stewardship or interpretive responsibilities for sacred objects that are not covered by NAGPRA and are not subject to specific national or international laws or treaties. Such works include those of non-federally recognized tribes, indigenous Mexican cultures, as well as other groups worldwide. The Report also encourages AAMD members to employ special sensitivity and professional judgment regarding the interpretation of sacred objects. Interpretation should be developed, if possible, in consultation with appropriate traditional religious leaders. In all cases, art museums should strive to represent and interpret all religious and sacred objects with respect and equity.
For additional information, see http://www.aamd.org/papers/documents/SacredObjectsReleaseandGuidelinesCombined8.9.06-dated.pdf (43 KB, pdf).

| RAND STUDY DESCRIBES STRATEGIES THAT CAN BUILD SUPPORT FOR STATE ARTS AGENCIES |
State arts agencies seeking increased state government support for the arts should strengthen their relationships with elected officials and raise their profile with the public, according to a RAND Corporation study issued on August 7, 2006. The report, which is the second in a multiyear study commissioned by The Wallace Foundation, suggests that strategies that reach out to the public and to government officials can be effective in positioning the arts higher on the list of governmental priorities.
Copies of "The Arts and State Governments: At Arm's Length or Arm in Arm?" can be ordered from RAND's Distribution Services (order@rand.org or call toll-free in the U.S. 877-584-8642) or can be downloaded at www.rand.org and from the Knowledge Center at www.wallacefoundation.org.
