2007 CONSERVATION ASSESSMENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE THIS FALL

The Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) is designed to help small to mid-sized museums of all types obtain a general assessment of the condition of their collections. Following an on-site assessment by a conservation professional, the museum receives a written report recommending priorities to improve collections care, staff education, long-range and emergency plans, and fundraising. The FY 2007 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) applications will be mailed on Friday, October 6, 2006, to museums on the CAP mailing list and will also be available on Heritage Preservation’s Web site at www.heritagepreservation.org. The postmark deadline for applications is December 1, 2006. Eligible participants will be accepted into the program on a first-come, first-served basis.

CAM would like to congratulate the following California museums that were accepted in 2006: Museum of Jurassic Technology, Museum of Latin American Art, Monterey Museum of Art, American Museum of Ceramic Art, San Diego Aerospace Museum, Marin History Museum, and the Trinity County Historical Society. These organizations were among 110 museums in 39 states and the District of Columbia that were selected to participate in CAP. To view the entire list of current CAP participants, visit www.heritagepreservation.org/CAP. To be added to the CAP application mailing list, or for more information, please contact CAP staff at cap@heritagepreservation.org or 202-233-0800.

GOVERNOR SIGNS STATE BUDGET AND SUPPORTS ARTS EDUCATION

The California budget, signed by Governor Schwarzenegger last Friday, includes the largest known state-funded expenditure for arts education in public schools in California and nationwide. Schools will receive an estimated $105 million in ongoing funding for arts education (estimated at $17-18 per student), in addition to a one-time allocation of $500 million for arts, music, and physical education equipment. These funds will be distributed to school districts, charter schools and county offices of education to support standards aligned instruction in kindergarten through grade twelve. The funds will be available for hiring additional staff, staff development, purchasing materials, books, supplies and equipment. The budget also allocates $5.11 million for the California Arts Council, which includes funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and revenue from the Arts License Plate. For additional information about the state budget, see http://www.ebudget.ca.gov/.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE 2007 CAM CONFERENCE

CAM will be hosting its next conference in Long Beach, California, February 21-23, 2007. Like 2006, this conference will bring together a diverse group of museum professionals from across California for a stimulating and enjoyable exchange of ideas, perspectives, and resources. Long Beach's waterfront will be the backdrop for a notable conference with the newly expanded Museum of Latin American Art, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Long Beach Museum of Art hosting evening events.

The conference will take place at the Coast Long Beach Hotel, 700 Queensway Drive in Long Beach. CAM has reserved a block of rooms for Wednesday, February 21-Friday, February 24, 2007 at a discounted rate of $115.00 plus tax. For a room with a bay view, the group rate is $135.00 plus tax. For additional information, see http://www.calmuseums.org/conferences_and_workshops/2007overview.html or contact the CAM Office at (831) 471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org. We hope to see you in Long Beach!

MUSEUM ASSESSMENT PROGRAM UPDATE

The American Association of Museum's Museum Assessment Program (MAP) has undergone some significant changes over the past year. The program is now supported through a cooperative agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This means that museums now apply to participate in the program through AAM, no longer applying for a grant from IMLS. This change has allowed AAM to streamline the program, enabling the smallest museums (those with budgets less than $125,000) to participate for free. AAM will now cover the Surveyor travel expenses, Surveyor honorarium, and provide participating museums with a $150 resource packet from the AAM bookstore at the end of their assessment. For more information, visit www.aam-us.org/map, call 202/289-9118, or e-mail map@aam-us.org.

In addition, AAM and IMLS recently announced that 116 U.S. museums will participate in the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) this year. Museums of all types and sizes will undertake one of four museum assessments: Institutional, Collections Management, Governance, and Public Dimension. The following California museums will begin one of the four assessment in July: Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art, History & Science; Gemological Institute of America Museum; Healdsburg Museum; Historic Mission San Juan Capistrano; National Center on Deafness, California State University, Northridge; Newport Harbor Nautical Museum; San Francisco Botanical Garden Society At Strybing Arboretum; Tomales Regional History Center; and Ventura County Museum of History & Art.

EXHIBIT HALL, SPONSORSHIPS, AND ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES UNVEILED FOR 2007 CAM CONFERENCE

Planning for the 2007 California Association of Museums’ (CAM) conference is underway and the guidelines for being an exhibitor, advertiser, and/or sponsor are now available. You can download a pdf version (190 KB) of the “Vendor and Consultant Prospectus” at http://www.calmuseums.org/conferences_and_workshops/Vendor_Consultant_Prospectus.pdf. This prospectus is for consultants and museum vendors who wish to showcase or advertise their products and services at the conference or support this professional development program through sponsorships.

To be listed in our preliminary conference program, which will be sent to 2,500 California museum professionals, business associates should send in their Vendor Contracts by September 1, 2006. There is no additional fee for this extra exposure—the Vendor Contract just needs to be received by the deadline! Please feel to contact the CAM office at 831-471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org if you have any questions.

CASINO NIGHTS MAY BE LEGAL SOON IN CALIFORNIA
Charitable casino night, Monte Carlo night and poker tournament fundraisers, currently outlawed in California, may be legal as early as January 1, 2007, under provisions of AB 839 (Alberto Torrico, D., Newark). The bill allows chapters of organizations to hold one fundraiser each per year and to take the cost of renting a space to hold the fundraiser out of the 10 percent limit on expenses that can be paid from proceeds of the event. The most recent version also clarifies the provision which allows venues in rural areas to host more than four fundraisers per year if preapproved by the Attorney General. Until AB 839 becomes law, however, charitable gaming nights are subject to law enforcement actions. For details, visit http://caag.state.ca.us/charities/. The newly formed "Characteristics of an Accreditable Museum" describe outcomes that all museums can and should strive for, and can achieve in ways appropriate to their resources. Download copies of all documents described here from www.aam-us.org/museumresources/accred/standards.cfm. (Excerpted from AAM’s Aviso Online, July 1, 2006.)
