NEW CAM INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERS ONLINE DIRECTORY

CAM recently launched a new format for the online directory of its institutional members. This new design organizes CAM's institutional members by county, making it easier for the general public and museum colleagues to locate a museum in a specific region of the state. To view this online directory, please see http://www.calmuseums.org/membership/institutions.html.

Please check the accuracy of your listing! These listings are updated annually when each museum's membership is renewed. If you have any questions or would like to make a change to your listing, please email Christine Bennett, CAM Program Assistant, at admin@calmuseums.org or call 831-471-9970. Thank you to all our institutional members for your support of CAM and the statewide museum field!

DONATIONS FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL GROUPS DROPPED BY 6.6% IN 2005 WHILE OVERALL CHARITY ROSE 2.7%

Americans donated $260.3-billion to charity last year, an increase of 2.7 percent after inflation, according to estimates released by Giving USA. About half of the $15-billion increase from 2004 — some $7.4-billion — was given in response to three natural disasters: the Indonesian tsunamis, the Gulf Coast hurricanes, and the earthquake in Pakistan. However, arts and cultural groups suffered declines in contributions with giving dropping by 6.6 percent. All areas of philanthropy except arts and cultural groups and health organizations experienced increases in giving, including social services, international, environment, education, religion, and public society benefit causes. For additional information, see http://philanthropy.com/free/update/2006/06/2006061901.htm.

The conference will take place at the Coast Long Beach Hotel, 700 Queensway Drive in Long Beach. STUDY SHOWS ALMOST 29% OF AMERICANS VOLUNTEERED IN 2005; CALIFORNIA RANKS 40TH IN VOLUNTEERING RATE AND 6TH IN MEDIAN NUMBER OF HOURS
A first-ever federal report released today by the Corporation for National and Community Service finds that states vary widely in how, when, and what percent of their citizens volunteer, while in every state women volunteer at a higher rate than men, and women with children and women who work have higher volunteer rates than other women. On a national level, 65.4 million or 28.8 percent of American adults volunteered in 2005, an increase of nearly six million volunteers since 2002, with an economic equivalent of almost $150 billion dollars in services each year. The study is also broken up into state and regions, with California ranking 40th in the percentage of volunteers (26.1%) and sixth in median annual hours (56 hours). For additional information about volunteering in America between 2002 and 2005, see http://nationalservice.gov/about/volunteering/index.asp.

CORPORATE FOUNDATIONS GAVE RECORD $3.6 BILLION IN 2005
Corporate foundations gave a record $3.6 billion in 2005 and many corporate foundation leaders expect continued growth in 2006, according to Key Facts on Corporate Foundations from the Foundation Center. Despite record giving from the surveyed 2,600 corporate foundations, however, corporate foundation giving still lags behind that of independent and community foundations. The report also found corporate foundation giving has decreased as a percentage of all giving from 17 percent in 1987 to 11 percent today. The release of the report coincides with the launch of Corporate Giving Online, a searchable database that enables grantseekers and other researchers to access timely information on corporations, their giving vehicles, corporate grants and in-kind gifts.
