| CAM RELEASES REPORT ABOUT CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS |
The California Association of Museums (CAM) is pleased to announce that a key report about museums statewide, About California Museums, is now available online. This report provides an overview of the state's museums in 2005, featuring data and statistics about their operations. The key findings paint a picture of the state's museums as educational assets to schoolchildren and citizens that are actively engaged in community partnerships. CAM thanks the 134 California museums who completed this comprehensive survey last Winter to help the field understand the overall trends and challenges.
About California Museums is available on the publications page of CAM's website at: CAM e-News and Other Publications
In comparison to CAM's survey conducted in 1997/1998, the new report reveals some interesting trends. In the last seven to eight years, the statewide museum field has experienced:
One interpretation of this data could be that museums are having to rely more on revenue-generating activities, such as fundraisers, memberships, and admission fees, to sustain their operations due to a decrease in state and local funding. Despite these challenges, new museums continue to be developed (5.6% since 2000) and one third of California museums are planning to launch a new capital campaign, open a new building or expansion, or significantly increase their current programs in the next three years. See the full report for additional information.
CAM will be releasing more reports in the coming weeks and months. The Needs Assessment of California Museums will be available in a few weeks on our website and it is estimated that The Financial and Salary Survey of California Museums and The Impact of Museums on the California State Economy will be available in early June. These surveys were completed by the Public Research Institute at San Francisco State University with grant support from the Getty Foundation. Please contact Celeste DeWald, CAM Executive Director, at (831) 471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org with any questions or comments.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT ON ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE
Making the Case for Culture is a new research project made possible by the collaboration of the Louise T. Blouin Foundation with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that aims to measure the economic importance of culture in a sample of key OECD countries. This will be the first time that the investment in cultural activity has been analyzed on this scale. It may then be possible to analyze whether there are correlations between the percentage of GDP spent on culture, economic prosperity and quality of life. The Foundation's goal is to build a better case for cultural investment through providing more convincing evidence that investment in culture can have a positive effect on a nation's economy and quality of life.
