CAM PUBLISHES A "CALIFORNIA MUSEUM MONTH TOOLKIT"

In a continuing effort to communicate the value and importance of museums in California, the California Association of Museums (CAM) is commencing its seventh statewide public relations and advocacy campaign on behalf of the state's museums. To make this statewide event a success, we need your assistance and participation.

There has never been a better year for your institution to become involved in California Museum Month or advocacy efforts! The following are exciting reasons why your museum should participate in California Museum Month this year:

  • In concert with the American Association of Museum's nationwide celebration of the Year of the Museum, CAM spearheaded a "Year of the California Museum" resolution, which was introduced by Assemblymember John Laird on February 14, 2006 and currently has 57 coauthors.
  • CAM has just released new data about California museum based on a 2005 study.
  • The California Travel and Tourism Council is issuing a special press release specifically for California Museum Month. This editorial news release will complement and leverage any press releases your institution issues to your local media.
  • The International Council of Museums has announced that May 18th is International Museum Day with the theme "Museums and Young People."
  • Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued a Proclamation in support of California Museum Month.

CAM has developed a publication to make it easier for every museum to help raise awareness of your organization, strengthen your relationships with your legislators, and participate in the statewide recognition of California Museum Month. The California Museum Month Toolkit will be mailed early next week to all current institutional members and may be accessed online by clicking on California Museum Month Toolkit (pdf, 938K). The toolkit includes pointers for meeting with elected offiicials, sample press releases and PSAs, ideas for hosting a program, and other templates and resources. The California Museum Month Toolkit is supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation. For additional information, see http://www.calmuseums.org/calmusmonth/index.html.

CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL REQUESTS FEEDBACK ON STRATEGIC PLAN

The California Arts Council members and staff have been engaged in the development of a new Strategic Plan. The California Arts Council has met over the past six months to develop a new strategic plan to guide its direction for the next three to five years. The plan has three main components: marketing, designed to increase public awareness of the arts in this the most creative state; advocacy, that is, telling our story and educating our authorizers; and focused programming, designed to promote the importance of arts education in California schools. Most assuredly, however, the Council will continue to provide small grants, implement special initiatives and work with our partners to advance the arts throughout the state.

The California Arts Council encourages you to review the plan, which can be found on their Website at http://www.cac.ca.gov/?id=321. Following your review of the plan, they invite you to provide public comment by responding to a brief questionnaire, which is found at the end of the document. The Council will entertain public input through April 15, 2006. If you have any questions regarding the California Arts Council's Strategic Plan or its planning efforts, please contact Marilyn Nielsen, Deputy Director, at (916) 322-6404 or mnielsen@caartscouncil.com.

IMLS RELEASES STUDY ABOUT THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN MUSEUMS AND LIBRARIES

As part of the Institute of Museum and Library Service's (IMLS) mandate to analyze needs and trends of museum and library services, they recently released a 2004 survey on the use of technology and digitization in the nation's libraries and museums.

In 2001, IMLS conducted the first-ever study of the status of new technology adoption and digitization in the nation's museums and libraries. This second study seeks to dig deeper and find out more about how and why our cultural institutions use technology and digitize their collections. It explores barriers as well as capacity and planning issues. To view the entire report or the key findings, see http://www.imls.gov/publications/TechDig05/.

2007 CAM CONFERENCE AND CALL FOR PROPOSALS

CAM is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its next conference in Long Beach, California, February 21-23, 2007. Like 2006, this conference will bring together a diverse group of museum professionals from across California for a stimulating and enjoyable exchange of ideas, perspectives and resources. Long Beach's waterfront will be the backdrop for a notable conference with the newly expanded Museum of Latin American Art, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and other Long Beach museums hosting evening events. The conference will take place at the Coast Long Beach Hotel where CAM has reserved a block of rooms for Wednesday, February 21-Friday, February 24, 2007 at a discounted rate of $115.00 plus tax. For a room with a bay view, the group rate is $135.00 plus tax.

The Call for Session and Workshop Proposals is now available online for the 2007 CAM Conference. CAM invites proposals from the field that present strategies and ideas for strengthening the future of museums, their programs, collections, and communities. See http://www.calmuseums.org/cam2007/callforproposals2.html for the guidelines and submission instructions. The deadline for submissions is June 2, 2006. We hope to see you in Long Beach!

MUSEUM LOAN NETWORK ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTORY OF EARLY AMERICAN ART
The Museum Loan Network (MLN) recently launched a new initiative, Energizing the Study of Early American Art (EEAA), with the aim of stimulating interest and activity in early American art. In 2005, the project awarded grants to 21 museums to identify early American portraits to be added to the MLN online Directory. The EEAA entries, nearly 500 pre-1840 American portraits, are now available online to museums through the MLN Directory. Descriptive object information is accompanied by visuals and remarks fields which may contain biographies of the artist and subject, historical context for the work, and provenance research. To view these entries, go to the MLN website: http://loanet.mit.edu/Directory/di_Access.htm and click on Directory login. On the pull down menu choose your institution and enter your case sensitive password. If you do not have a password, please contact the MLN at loanet@mit.edu or at 617.252.1888. To see all of the EEAA entries in one search, choose EEAA in the Subject pull down menu. Or to display entries by museum, choose the appropriate name in the Museum pull down menu. For more information on this project or to get a password to access the Directory please contact the Museum Loan Network at 617-252-1888 or loanet@mit.edu.

The survey is designed to be taken by Development or Membership Professionals at US museums. The results will be made available to anyone who is interested. The survey is located here: http://poll.icommons.harvard.edu/poll/taker/pollTakerOpen.jsp?poll=1-3843-60634 If you have questions, contact the researcher at jresnick@fas.harvard.edu.

REPORT PREDICTS DEFICIT IN NONPROFIT LEADERS
According to The Nonprofit Sector's Leadership Deficit, nonprofits will need to attract and develop 640,000 new leaders during the next decade, or the equivalent of 2.4 times the number currently employed, to replace leaders who retire or leave the field. The Bridgespan Group's report notes that the reasons for the looming deficit are complex, but are related to the sector's growth, the swelling numbers of baby boomer retirees and the lack of internal resources to develop new leaders and provide career mobility for current leaders. The study recommends that nonprofits explore opportunities to invest in leadership capacity, refine management rewards to retain and attract top talent, expand their recruiting horizons and foster individual career mobility.
