| 7TH ANNUAL CALIFORNIA MUSEUM MONTH CAMPAIGN - CTTC TO ISSUE A SPECIAL PRESS RELEASE; SUBMISSIONS REQUESTED FROM MUSEUMS BY MARCH 8, 2006 |
In a continuing effort to communicate the value and importance of museums in California, CAM will be commencing its seventh statewide public relations and advocacy campaign on behalf of the state's museums. California Museum Month in May 2006 will focus the attention of media, legislators, and the public on the important role that museums play in our state. Organized by CAM, the purpose of California Museum Month is to celebrate the diversity of the community services provided by California's 1,300 museums, science centers, zoos, historical societies, botanical gardens and cultural centers.
To make this statewide event a success, we need your assistance. CAM is asking California museums to host a special community event during California Museum Month. You may wish to fold the celebration into an existing event or program.
To help promote your events for California Museum Month, the California Travel and Tourism Council (CTTC) will be issuing a special release to their news release editorial calendar for this fiscal year. Their goal is to provide the most newsworthy information to journalists while representing all California regions. To submit an event for possible inclusion in this press release, please download CTTC's Press Release Submission Form and email it to Sam Caygill, Media Relations Manager, at scaygill@cttc1.com by March 8, 2006.
In April and May 2006, CAM will distribute a general release to media outlets across the state about the merits of California museums and citing data from the 2005 California museums survey. In early April, CAM will send all Institutional Members a media kit to help them promote their California Museum Month events to their regional newspapers, radio stations, and other media outlets.
| YEAR OF THE CALIFORNIA MUSEUM BILL INTRODUCED |
Last week, at the closing reception of the 2006 CAM Conference, Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) announced that he introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 119 on February 14, 2006 proclaiming 2006 as the Year of the California Museum. The resolution declares that California is home to over 1,300 museums that are located in every county and region throughout the state and that serve over 26 million visitors annually. To read ACR 119 in its entirety, visit http://leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_0101-0150/acr_119_bill_20060214_introduced.html. The resolution has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Rules.
The California Association of Museums invites all museums, museum service organizations, California residents, and local governments to use this milestone to recognize and celebrate the contributions of California museums as they serve the state. This resolution is held in conjunction with the nationwide Year of the Museum efforts spearheaded by the American Association of Museums (see "US House of Representatives Passes Year of the Museum Resolution" below).
If you would like to submit a letter of support for ACR 119, please send it to Assemblymember John Laird, State Capitol, P.O. Box 942849, Sacramento, CA 94249-0027 or FAX it to fax it to (916) 319-2127. Please also fax a copy of your letter to CAM's Legislative Advocate, Kathryn Lynch, at (916) 443-7353.
