It has been an active year for CAM, with the 2005 Regional Workshop Series, California Museum Month last May, the first full year of distributing CAM e-News, the California museums survey, and our advocacy work. We look forward to working with all you in 2006 to strengthen and empower California's museums.
Also, thank you to the organizations and individuals who participated in the California museums survey. We truly appreciate the time you spent in completing the questionnaires and providing us with valuable information. We will be highlighting the findings at the CAM Conference in Monterey and will publish and distribute the reports this Spring. | NEW HISTORICAL RECORDS GRANT OPPORTUNITY |
The California Historical Records Advisory Board (CHRAB) was recently awarded $100,000 in funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) for the implementation of a regrant project. The CHRAB, which serves as the statewide coordinator for historical records planning, will use the award to fund projects for smaller local governments and historical record repositories (including nonprofit organizations) that focus on the management and preservation of local historical collections. The two-year project will begin in March 2006. The typical regrant will average about $8,000-$10,000.
In preparation, half-day workshops will be offered at selected areas in the state to provide an overview of the project to prospective applicants and to offer assistance in developing a sound proposal. In addition, the project team will offer one-day workshops on basic archives management that will be available to successful grant applicants and staff from other repositories. | CCAHA OFFERS SUBSIDIZED PRESERVATION NEEDS ASSESSMENTS |
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifact’s competitive subsidized Preservation Needs Assessment Program for paper-based collections is being continued through the funding of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). If your institution owns a paper-based humanities collection that is available to the public on a regularly scheduled basis and has historical and educational significance, you are eligible to apply for participation in CCAHA’s subsidized Preservation Needs Assessment Program. Institutions funded by the federal government are not eligible. Preservation overview surveys can cost a minimum of $3,000. CCAHA is able to offer a limited number of subsidized preservation overview surveys for $350. The grant funding also covers the surveyor’s travel expenses. TARGET CORPORATION PROVIDES GRANTS FOR ARTS TEACHERS, ORGANIZATIONS
Corporations often like to participate in local communities, and the latest to jump on the bandwagon is the Target Corporation. The company gives small grants to support arts education and reading ($1,000 to $3,000). Grants are for arts and reading, and applications for 2006 are accepted between March 1 and May 31, 2006. Because applications are reviewed as they are received, potential grantees are encouraged to apply early. TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY GRANT PROGRAM THROUGH U.S. DEPT. OF EDUCATION
Teaching American History grants support projects to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding and appreciation of traditional American history. Local educational agencies are eligible but they must work in partnership with a museum, nonprofit group or institute of higher learning. An intent to apply must be filed by January 6, 2006 and the applications are due February 3, 2006. There will be 100 awards of up to $2,000,000. GREEN FOUNDATION PROVIDES FUNDING FOR THE ARTS
Among other funding areas, the Green Foundation gives grants to institutions that promote the expansion of community arts programs and/or support youth and adult creativity in their regular schedules. Grant awards range from $5,000 to $25,000. The majority of grants are given to nonprofit organizations serving Los Angeles County with a limited number for statewide or national programs. CONTEMPORARY ART GRANT FOR CURATORS FROM EMILY HALL TREMAINE FOUNDATION
The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation is offering curators the opportunity to be awarded a grant of $125,000 for the realization of a strong thematic exhibition concept that challenges the boundaries of contemporary art. The biennial Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award, established in 1998, rewards innovation and experimentation at the curatorial level. THE LITERACY QUESTION: NEW THEORIES AND PRACTICES IN ARTS-INTEGRATED LEARNING
The Wolfsonian-Florida International University will host a two-day symposium May 19-20, 2006 to examine new definitions of literacy in relationship to arts integrated teaching and learning practices.The symposium will investigate new theoretical models in the field of literacy, including new literacies and multiliteracies-conceptualizations that seek to understand the evolving nature of literacy in the new millennium. Structured as an interactive workshop with scholarly presentations and small group discussions, each day will shift from theory to practice, exploring models of classroom and museum teaching and learning practices that use visual art and media to address literacy and critical thinking. SHARED INTERPRETATIONS OF CALIFORNIA HISTORY: A CONFERENCE
This Conference will focus on the weighing of evidence by federal and state institutions when determining cultural affiliation for the purposes of NAGPRA and other cultural resource laws. The conference will bring city, county, state, and federal agencies together with tribal communities to determine better ways of communicating and appreciating different types of evidence. There will be panels on specific NAGPRA and cultural resource cases, SB-18, Consultation, and the topic of scientific techniques. This event is sponsored by San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and UCLA Tribal Learning Community and Educational Exchange within the Native Natives Law and Policy Center. The conference is January 14th and 15th, 2006, at San Manuel Community Center in Highlands, California. NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR LIBRARIES
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is currently accepting nominations for the 2006 National Awards for Museum and Library Service. The National Awards were created to underscore the vital role of museums and libraries as leaders in our democratic society. The award recognizes museums and libraries that demonstrate a core commitment to public service through innovative programs and active partnerships that address the changing needs of the communities they serve. LEARNING CIRCLES: TOWARD COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Museum professionals from across Canada are beginning regular interactive online "conversations" in a new forum called Learning Circles. The conversations will take place Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 pm (Pacific Standard Time) from January 26 to March 2, 2006 and are hosted by the Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria. This opportunity is open to professionals involved in museums, heritage, science and cultural centres, and art galleries. LEARN AND SERVE: AMERICAN SCHOOL-BASED GRANT PROGRAM
This program, administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, will involve young people between the ages five and 17 in service-learning projects that simultaneously support student development and meet community needs in areas such as the environment, education, and areas of other human needs. The program provides funds to state education agencies and grant making entities, which must make sub-grants to state-defined local education agencies (LEAs) that are in partnership with at least one additional organization. LEA partners may include private schools, for-profit businesses, faith-based organizations, other nonprofits and institutions of higher education. RELIGION AND SOCIETY GRANT OPPORTUNITY
The U.S. Department of State announced a special competition for two to three grants to support international exchange projects under the rubric "Religion and Society: A Dialogue." Public and private non-profit organizations may submit proposals to develop and implement a multi-phased exchange to engage influential clerics, religious scholars and community leaders from countries with significant Muslim populations in dialogue designed to educate participants about the scholarship and practice of Islam in the United States and the world and the compatibility of religious practice and democratic social and political values and structures. GETTY FOUNDATION MULTICULTURAL UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIPS PROGRAM
Los Angeles-area museums and visual arts organizations are invited to apply for multicultural undergraduate internships during summer 2006. The internships are intended specifically for outstanding students who are members of groups currently underrepresented in these professions. Museums and visual arts organizations in Los Angeles County may request support for one to three full-time internship positions, each with a salary of $3,500, for a consecutive ten-week period between June and August 2006. In addition to salaries, organizations will receive $500 per internship to assist with administrative costs. Large organizations with multiple departments may apply for more than three interns. NORRIS FOUNDATION GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
The Norris Foundation supports programs that advance better health and intellectual enlightenment through education, cultivation of the arts, individual responsibility, freedom and dignity. Support is provided for general operating support, project support, equipment purchases, capital needs, endowments and scholarships. Letters of inquiry are not required but applicants may submit them to determine the category under which they may apply. The deadlines vary according to category but applications in the cultural and arts category are due through January 31, 2006. FREE TIMESHEETS FOR SMALL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
A software company, Journyx, is offering free time tracking software for nonprofit organizations. This software enables employee time tracking to automate billing, payroll and project or grant accounting. The company hopes that free users will provide feedback and suggestions about their new version. In order to use the software nonprofits need a Linux machine or a Windows server box running XP, 2000, 2003 or NT4.0 or greater. Nonprofits can learn more and download a free copy of the software from the Journyx Web site at www.freetimesheet.com.
INTERNATIONAL ARTS CONNECTION RESIDENCIES FOR CENTRAL EUROPE, RUSSIA, EURASIA
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will fund residencies to promote in-depth interaction between artists from the region of central Europe, Russia and Eurasia and artists and audiences in the U.S. Artists and arts managers from the region participate in five-week residencies with cultural organizations in the United States.
