| CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 9TH |
There are only three days left to participate in the 2005 survey of California museums--the deadline has been extended to FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9TH. CAM requests the participation of all California museums in a major survey of the state's museums, funded in part by the Getty Foundation. All California museums were sent a postcard in late October inviting them to participate and providing a unique access code to access the online survey.
How can your institution benefit from participating in this survey? Once the survey results are available, you will be able to compare your salaries with other museums', examine your expenses and income sources in comparison with similar sized institutions, and have access to other data to share with your board and staff members. This information can be extremely valuable when developing strategic plans, forecasting future budgets, or analyzing your museum's performance.
To access the online survey, museum administrators should go to https://prisurvey.sfsu.edu/cam2005 and, after the introductory page, enter the access code indicated on the postcard send several weeks ago (next to the mailing address).
Please contact Public Research Institute at 415-338-2978 or pri@sfsu.edu for a hard copy of the survey, to receive an access code, or if there are technical difficulties. For general questions about the survey, please contact Celeste DeWald, CAM Executive Director, at 831-471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org.
| HERITAGE HEALTH INDEX FINDINGS UNVEILED YESTERDAY IN NEWS CONFERENCE |
At a news conference in New York City yesterday, the findings from a comprehensive survey to assess the condition and preservation needs of U.S. collections was unveiled. Titled the Heritage Health Index, the report concludes that immediate action is needed to prevent the loss of millions of irreplaceable artifacts. Detailed in A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America's Collections, some of the findings include:
The Heritage Health Index is a project of Heritage Preservation, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency. To view a summary or the full report and additonal details, click on http://www.heritagehealthindex.org/.
The Annie E. Casey Foundation has released the results of the largest-ever study that examines the tenure and future plans of nonprofit executives. The survey covers 2,200 respondents and the key findings point to potentially disruptive implications in nonprofit leadership, as the Baby Boomer generation transitions out of the sector. Some of the key findings of the survey are:
The first is already beginning to occur and will continue through 2010. The second wave will peak in 2020, as all Baby Boomers approach traditional retirement age. Women executives outnumber men (58 percent of nonprofits), but they run smaller organizations and make less money. The four-page summary of the survey as well as the full survey can be viewed on the Annie E. Casey Foundation Web site at: http://www.aecf.org/publications/browse.php?filter=20. | WHITE PAPER ADDRESSES ACCESSIBILITY IN ARTS AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS |
The Association of Performing Arts Presenters (Arts Presenters) recently released its first white paper on accessibility and the performing arts, Beyond the Ramp: Accessibility as an Organizational Asset, by Johanna Misey Boyer. The new publication, funded by MetLife Foundation, furthers the national dialogue on increasing cultural opportunities for people with disabilities and older adults. This population of audience-goers and artists is a growing area of importance for performing arts organizations.
Written to guide arts administrators who lead performing arts centers, festivals, community facilities and other professionals who work in the field, Beyond the Ramp demonstrates the power of these growing audiences with statistics, best practices, reference materials and accepted language to work effectively. Boyer suggests overcoming existing barriers to achieve accessibility that go beyond the Americans with Disabilities Act. To go further in making accessibility an asset for an organization, she outlines approaches that include examining an organization's philosophy, expanding the way the organization thinks about diversity, and increasing accessibility through planning, evaluation and leadership. To view the entire publication online as a PDF, click on http://www.artspresenters.org/members/pdf/beyondtheramp.pdf.

NONPROFIT ECONOMIC SURVEY SUGGESTS CONTRIBUTIONS WERE COMPARABLE TO 2004
According to GuideStar's fourth annual nonprofit economic survey, nonprofit organizations were not significantly affected by the unprecedented upswing in recent disaster-related donations. Despite widespread giving to disaster relief, this year's responses were remarkably similar to those for 2004. However, when asked how they thought disaster-relief giving would affect their organizations' end-of-year fundraising, 79 percent of respondents predicted that contributions would stay about the same or decrease. Meanwhile, 70 percent of respondents reported that demand for their organizations' services had increased. (Organizations in the arts/culture/humanities category had the smallest percentage of participants reporting increased demand, with 53 percent indicating an increase.) To read additional details about GuideStar's survey, visit http://www.guidestar.org/news/features/2005_survey_results.jsp.

To nominate individuals, submit a brief anecdote or testimonial about how this outstanding individual has advanced the field over the past century. The individuals can be from the past or present, living or deceased, as long as they've helped advance the museum field in the United States between 1906 and 2006. Visit http://www.aam-us.org/nominationForm.cfm to fill out the nomination form. The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2005.

REPORT SAYS DONORS GIVE TO SMALLER CHARITIES AND WARY OF BIG BUSINESS TECHNIQUES
According to a new report released by Public Agenda, a nonpartisan public policy research organization, donors are particularly likely to give to small, community-based charities and are positive about the charities and nonprofits they support. They become concerned, however, when organizations market themselves with methods that mimic those of big business, such as telemarketing and high-pressure appeals. Givers also have high expectations for ethical behavior and a long memory for scandal and waste. See http://newsmanager.commpartners.com/aama/issues/2005-12-01/10.html for additional information. (Exerpted from the American Association of Museums' AVISO, December 2005.)
