FIND YOUR MUSE... Be a member of the California Association of Museums! | HELP IS STILL NEEDED FOR MUSEUMS HELPING MUSEUMS PROJECT |
Help is still greatly needed in the Museums Helping Museums: A National Relief Effort for the Gulf Coast Region, sponsored by 16 national, regional, and state museum associations, including CAM. In light of the tremendous loss of natural and cultural heritage along the Gulf Coast, the American museum community is joining together to support our colleagues as they work to care for damaged collections and to restore the vital educational, cultural, and economic roles of their museums. Through December, museums are asked to consider donating a portion of their admissions; offering visitors the option to add a contribution at admission; erecting a donation box for contributions from the public; or donating a percentage of the museum shop sales.
Access a sample press release at www.aam-us.org/sp/mhm/press.cfm and use it to prepare your own announcement for distribution to local media outlets. Register your institution's name and method of participation in an on-line form at www.aam-us.org/sp/mhm. To be recognized in this publicity effort, please register your museum before December 31, 2005.
All funds collected will go to a hurricane relief fund established by the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC)--and they have already quickly granted the initial $50,000 they had available. Please feel free to contact Celeste DeWald, Executive Director, at the CAM office at (831) 471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org with any questions or comments you may have about this nationwide relief effort.
PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY OF CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS BEFORE DECEMBER 7TH
Your participation in the California Museums survey before December 7th is very important. The survey is comprehensive and includes questions about each organization's programs, collections, training needs, budget, personnel, and salary ranges.
How can your institution benefit from participating in this survey? Once the survey results are available, you will be able to compare your salaries with other museums' personnel expenses, examine your expenses and income sources with similar institutions, and have access to other data to share with your board and staff members. This information can be extremely valuable when developing strategic plans, forecasting future budgets, or analyzing your museum's performance.
The survey is being conducted online, however, PDF versions of the survey may be downloaded on the introduction page. Due to the detailed nature and broad scope of questions, you may wish to print the PDF version and answer the questions on paper prior to inputting the data online. To access the online survey, museum administrators should go to https://prisurvey.sfsu.edu/cam2005 and, after the introductory page, enter the access code indicated on the postcard send several weeks ago (next to the mailing address). Each museum's response will be completely confidential and most questions are multiple choice. Please contact Public Research Institute at 415-338-2978 or pri@sfsu.edu for a hard copy of the survey, to receive an access code, or if there are technical difficulties. For general questions about the survey, please contact Celeste DeWald, CAM Executive Director, at 831-471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org.
REMEMBER TO INCREASE YOUR POSTAGE BUDGET FOR 2006
The independent Postal Rate Commission approved a postage rate increase expected to take effect in early 2006. The cost of a First-Class stamp will go up two cents, to 39 cents, while the postcard rate will rise to 24 cents. The Commission altered the rates proposed for nonprofit organizations so that they will pay $17 million less than the Postal Service requested, and recommended that small local newspapers enjoy a 2.3% rate decrease. However, the Commission found that the rates sought for books and media materials was too low to cover the cost of handling that mail, and recommended a 12.7% increase. For additional information, visit www.chathamjournal.com/weekly/business/bizcolumns/postal-rate-hike-51102.shtml.
MAKE A DONATION TOWARDS CAM'S LEGISLATIVE EFFORTS
When the Legislative Session resumes on January 4, 2006, CAM will continue to maintain a presence at the State Capitol and serve as an advocate for all California museums. CAM’s advocacy efforts are working. For example, without CAM’s involvement, it is quite possible that all California museums would have been required to make periodic announcements about their emergency exits at family programs or receptions beginning January 1, 2006. This level of advocacy, however, is expensive. In the current fiscal year, CAM will spend over $26,000 to retain the services of a lobbyist and host the annual Legislative Advocacy Day, representing almost 14% of our annual operating budget. CAM is unable to fund its legislative work solely through memberships. For that reason, we are asking all members and supporters to make a financial contribution towards our legislative advocacy efforts.
Any donation is appreciated and will help California museums continue to have a voice in Sacramento and a presence in the offices of our elected officials. See http://www.calmuseums.org/legislation/2005_appeal_letter.pdf (PDF file) to read about the difference CAM is making and to contribute to this worthy cause. For additional information, please contact Celeste DeWald, Executive Director, at (831) 471-9970 or cam@calmuseums.org.
DISCREPANCIES IN RANKING THE GENEROSITY OF CALIFORNIA'S RESIDENTS
The Generosity Index for 2005, published by the Catalogue for Philanthropy, gave California a ranking of 31 on a list of all states according to their level of generosity (see http://www.catalogueforphilanthropy.org/cfp/generosity_index/ for additional information). But that ranking has been elevated to #5 in a new report commissioned by the Boston Foundation, titled Geography and Generosity: Boston and Beyond, which subjects the Generosity Index to scrutiny. The Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College has developed a different methodology for measuring charitable donations relative to income--largely in response to Massachusetts being listed one of the stingiest by the Generosity Index. The author suggests a more rigorous way to calculate the level of giving in a particular state and calls for a different way to understand the idea of generosity. For additional information, see http://www.tbf.org/About/about-L2.asp?id=3273.
