| VISITOR EXPERIENCE TRAINING WORKSHOP - SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 7 |
The deadline for submitting a scholarship application for CAM's Visitor Experience Training workshop has been extended to Friday, October 7, 2005. Visitor Experience Training is the last workshop in CAM's 2005 Regional Workshop Series. This workshop will explore current educational and visitor studies theory shaping museum experiences and how these theories can be effectively applied to the floor. The goal is to provide a consistent understanding of what museums do and reconcile that with visitors’ expectations and actual experiences. Through interactive exercises and real gallery visits, participants will use Falk & Dierking’s Interactive Experience Model to practice identifying parts of the visitor experience; design an exhibit and a program using the theories of Howard Gardner and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; and consider the move toward lifelong education in Falk & Dierking's new work Lessons Without Limits and Guy Claxton’s Wiseup. The workshop is presented by Lynn Rosamond Norris, Director of Visitor Relations at COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts.

| AN UPDATE ON KATRINA RECOVERY EFFORTS FOR MUSEUMS |
The following is an update on the efforts of nationwide museum association and federal agencies in recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina.
The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) has mounted two mobile teams to go to Louisiana and Mississippi to help assess damage to historical resources, and begin the recovery process. They are working in partnership with the American Institute for Conservation, the Southeast Museums Conference, the Louisiana Museums Association, and the Mississippi Museums Assocation. Once mobile teams make assessments, AASLH will also send in follow-up teams to work with specific museums. Museums and individuals can assist AASLH in their efforts in the following ways:
The American Association of Museums (AAM) reported that the House and Senate passed Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act of 2005 (H.R. 3768) last week to provide some measures of immediate tax relief to citizens affected by Hurricane Katrina. The bill was signed by the President and contains tax incentives and provisions concerning several types of charitable contributions by individuals and organizations including lifting of limits individuals can deduct (from 50% to 100%) from their gross adjusted income for all charitable contributions and lifting of limits organizations can deduct (from 10% to 100%) for contributions to Katrina relief through December 31, 2005. The House Ways and Means summary of the bill's provisions can be viewed at: http://waysandmeans.house.gov/media/pdf/taxdocs/092105katrinasummary.pdf. The Senate Finance summary of the bill's provisions can be viewed at: http://finance.senate.gov/sitepages/leg/092205act.pdf.
In efforts to provide immediate assistance to people and organizations in the affected areas, FEDERAL funding agencies have taken the following actions:
Americans for the Arts has established an emergency relief fund to provide timely financial assistance to victims of a major disaster for the purpose of helping them rebuild the arts in their community. One hundred percent of relief funds will be distributed directly to local arts agencies for the purpose of assisting with their own recovery and their provision of needed services and funding to nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists, as well as to other cultural relief efforts. To make a contribution to the Emergency Relief Fund or to learn more about how to apply for financial assistance, visit www.AmericansFortheArts.org/EmergencyRelief, or contact Americans for the Arts toll-free at 866.471.2787 and ask for the Americans for the Arts Emergency Relief Fund. | TOOLS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR CALIFORNIA ARTS DAY - OCTOBER 7TH |
The California Arts Council (CAC) is creating one cumulative celebration, California Arts Day 2005, to focus the general public on the value of the arts on October 7, 2005! The following is general information about tools, resources and opportunities for museums and/or individuals who wish to participate:
| NON-CASH GIFT UPDATE FROM AAM |
The American Association of Museums (AAM) has reports that the Senate Finance committee staff drafting the nonprofit reform legislation will not include changing non-cash donations to "cost basis" or the amount the donor paid for the property. While not a certainty, this is a positive step towards advancing reasonable solutions to the over-valuation of non-cash donations. (For additional background on this issues, see Congress Reconsiders Tax Deductibility of Non-Cash Donations.) They thank the members of the Museum Advocacy Team® and other museum professionals who contacted their representatives in Congress on this issue.
AAM expects the Senate Finance Committee to introduce legislation this fall that will combine efforts to promote tax incentives for charitable giving (to assist both the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts and the larger nonprofit community) and some of the reform proposals recommended by the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector. Momentum on this issue may gain speed due to the tremendous need for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief and strong interest in creating new deterrents and punishments for abusive charities, leading to an unusually short period between the introduction of legislation and its enactment.
Once legislation is available, AAM will act quickly to analyze the effect on museums and distribute a legislative summary, talking points and sample letters for advocates. In the meantime, they are gathering names of individuals who can be part of a fast response team that will act quickly to contact members of Congress and articulate the views of the museum community. Such a team is especially important under these circumstances. If you, or a member of your Board, or other staff member would be willing to contact your elected official regarding this issue, please contact Ember Farber at mat@aam-us.org with your response. [Excerpted from AAM Museum Advocacy Alert, September 14, 2005.]
