| JAMES IRVINE FOUNDATION RELEASES THE "MUSEUMS AFTER SCHOOL" REPORT |
The James Irvine Foundation recently announces the release of “Museums After School: How Museums Are Reaching Kids, Partnering with Schools, and Making a Difference.” The report explores the experiences of ten California museums who participated in the Museum Youth Initiative, an effort by The James Irvine Foundation to fund museums across California to implement and evaluate after-school programming for young people. "Museums After School" presents key evaluation findings which explore how museums are approaching after-school work, lessons learned about effective practice, and other components of the programs. The report is based on a series of annual assessments conducted over the course of the initiative and interviews with participants and leaders in the museum field. The report was created especially for museum practitioners and can be downloaded at http://www.irvine.org/assets/pdf/pubs/former/Museums_After_School.pdf.
| PREPARATIONS ARE UNDERWAY FOR CALIFORNIA ARTS DAY - OCTOBER 7 |
The annual "California Arts Day" on Friday October 7--the event created five years ago to recognize the role that the Arts such as music, theater, visual art, poetry, and dance among others play in California--is fast approaching, and organizations and individuals are gearing up to participate and show lawmakers that the arts are important. For example, in Pasadena a number of organizations will offer free arts, music and culture, including (but not limited to): the Armory Center for the Arts, Armory Northwest, Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena Museum of History and several others. Suggestions on how performing arts and visual arts organizations may participate can be found at http://www.cac.ca.gov/?id=261. If you have an idea for California Arts Day and would like to submit it to the CAC, please email Mary Beth at mbarber@caartscouncil.com with the subject heading "California Arts Day idea," and keep looking to http://www.cac.ca.gov for the California Arts Day database of events and activities.
While individual organizations are hosting programs throughout California, the California Arts Council and the State Council on Developmental Disabilities will be on the West steps of the capital. Organizations, artists and arts lovers are invited to help promote the importance of the arts. California Poet Laureate Al Young will speak and read his poetry, and awards to finalists of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities Poster Art Contest for 2004 and 2005 will be presented. CAC is especially interested in organizations that would like to both promote the arts and themselves through short performances (approximately 20 minutes), or by staffing informational tables for onlookers to gather information. If your organization is not able to attend, material can be sent to the CAC for distribution. (Please note: no products can be bought or sold on state grounds, and presentations and materials must be of a non-political nature.) If your organization would like to participate, please call or email Wayne cook at 916-322-6344 or wcook@caartscouncil.com with the subject "Arts Day at the Capital." Material can be sent to the CAC at 1300 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 with the same subject heading.
