LEARN HOW TO GET MORE MONEY FOR YOUR MUSEUM
The CAM workshop Fundraising Strategies: A Grab-bag of Ideas and Tools promises to be an entertaining and comprehensive education in current museum fundraising techniques with presentations by three seasoned development professionals. It will provide "one-stop shopping" for a variety of fundraising strategies, including membership, sponsorships, major gifts, planned giving, and special events and be especially pertinent to small and mid-sized museums. Representing institutions that vary in size and discipline, the presenters will discuss development efforts that have been effective for their institutions and provide samples. To put the fun back in fundraising, there will be a raffle, a special events game, and plenty of time to share ideas! The workshop will take place on Wednesday, September 28, 2005, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. This workshop is held in conjunction with the Western Museums Association's conference in Pasadena and Los Angeles, "A Rose by Any Other Name: Integrity, Mission, Authenticity," September 28 - October 2, 2005. Moderated by Stephen Becker, Executive Director of the California Historical Society and CAM President, the workshop will feature presentations by: Beverly Grova, Director of Development & Government Relations, National Steinbeck Center. Jill Rode, Development Director, Santa Barbara Zoo, and Gina Tan, Director of Membership and Annual Fund, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS: Registration for this workshop (code PC5) can be found at www.westmuse.org, in conjunction with the Western Museums Association's (WMA) conference. The price is only $55--a bargain for learning new fundraising strategies to boost revenue for your institution! (An additional fee of $50 is assessed if you are not attending the WMA conference.) The fee includes workshop participation, a boxed lunch, and a additional samples and resources. Please call the CAM office at (831) 471-9970 with any questions you may have. Scholarship applications for emerging museum professionals and volunteers and staff members from small institutions are due September 2, 2005. For additional information, please click on WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIPS.

REMINDER: CALL YOUR LEGISLATOR FOR YEAR OF THE MUSEUM

The American Association of Museums (AAM) recently announced that legislation was introduced on July 26, 2005 "to support the goals and ideals of The Year of the Museum." The authors of H. Res. 389 circulated a letter to all members of the House of Representatives asking their colleagues to join them as cosponsors to promote the public value of museums. AAM's goal is to get every member of Congress signed onto the resolution, which will be the beginning of a major national campaign to engage the public and elected officials in the benefits that museums offer in every community and why they matter. AAM encourages all museum representatives to call, e-mail or fax your member of Congress and ask him or her to sign on as a cosponsor of H. Res. 389, recognizing 2006 as the Year of the Museum. This is a particularly easy "ask" for you and your representative, even in a very tight budget year, since it is a no-cost item. Your representative's staff can contact Sherrye Henry in Congresswoman Slaughter's office at 202-225-3615 or Sarah Moore in Congressman Shays' office at 202-225-5541 to sign on as cosponsors of this exciting legislation. Visit the AAM website at www.aam-us.org/site/centennial.cfm for background information on the Year of the Museum and ideas for how your institution can participate.

CALL FOR IMAGES DEPICTING PROGRAMS OF CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS

CAM is in the process of designing a new general brochure and is requesting images and quotes from California museums. The images can be photographs of school groups, artifacts in a collection, visitors in an exhibition or others that depict the programs and services of museums across the state. CAM is looking for diversity in the type of museums depicted (i.e. in discipline, geographical region, and size) as well as in the populations our museums serve. All images should be at least 300 dpi. We would also like to include quotes from members regarding CAM's programs and services. The institutions whose images are featured in the brochure will be credited; quotes will cite each individual's name, title, and institution. Please forward the images and quotes to Gretchen Wolthausen, CAM Program Assistant, at admin@calmuseums.org by Wednesday, August 24, 2005 (in one week).
