HELP MAKE 2006 THE YEAR OF THE MUSEUM

The American Association of Museums (AAM) recently announced that legislation was introduced on July 26, 2005 "to support the goals and ideals of The Year of the Museum." The authors of H. Res. 389 circulated a letter to all members of the House of Representatives asking their colleagues to join them as cosponsors to promote the public value of museums. AAM's goal is to get every member of Congress signed onto the resolution, which will be the beginning of a major national campaign to engage the public and elected officials in the benefits that museums offer in every community and why they matter. AAM encourages all museum representatives to call, e-mail or fax your member of Congress and ask him or her to sign on as a cosponsor of H. Res. 389, recognizing 2006 as the Year of the Museum. This is a particularly easy "ask" for you and your representative, even in a very tight budget year, since it is a no-cost item. Your representative's staff can contact Sherrye Henry in Congresswoman Slaughter's office at 202-225-3615 or Sarah Moore in Congressman Shays' office at 202-225-5541 to sign on as cosponsors of this exciting legislation. Visit the AAM website at www.aam-us.org/ for background information on the Year of the Museum and ideas for how your institution can participate.
