| LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR COLLECTIONS WORKSHOP IN SAN DIEGO |
There are only two weeks left to register for the August 18, 2005 workshop Identifying Risks and Protecting Your Collection from Natural Disasters at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Earthquakes and their secondary effects incorporate a multitude of risk challenges in California. In order to preserve the cultural resources entrusted to museums, this workshop will give staff members and volunteers the tools and knowledge to identify the threats that place our collections at risk and develop ways to safeguard them for the future. There will be handouts on a variety of related topics such as disaster preparedness planning, conservation resources, and storage equipment companies as well as actual samples of materials available to safeguard collections. Participants will also be given an opportunity to ask questions pertaining to their own particular concerns and needs. The presenters are: Louis Goldich, Museum Consultant, and former registrar at the San Diego Museum of Art for twenty-six years; Donna Williams, Conservator; and William Allen, Collection Insurance Broker, Henderson Phillips. The workshop will be from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The registration fee for this workshop is $50 for CAM members and $75 for nonmembers and includes a boxed lunch. On July 19th, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded $16,859,240 to 169 museums across the country under its Museums for America grant program. IMLS received 543 applications requesting over $50 million. CAM congratulates all 24 museums in California who are grant recipients. These museums include: the Aquarium of the Pacific; Bay Area Discovery Museum; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; California Indian Museum and Cultural Center; Chico Museum Association; Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose; Crocker Art Museum; Explorit Science Center; Jepson Herbarium; Kern County Museum; Laguna Art Museum; Long Beach Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens; Museum of Contemporary Art; Oakland Museum of California; San Diego Archaeological Center; San Diego Historical Society; San Diego Museum of Art; San Diego Natural History Museum; South Coast Railroad Museum; Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens; University Art Museum - Long Beach; and the Zoological Society of San Diego. PUTTING THE FUN BACK IN FUNDRAISING - MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR CAM WORKSHOP
The CAM workshop, "Fundraising Strategies: A Grab-bag of Ideas and Tools," promises to be an entertaining and comprehensive education in museum development work! It will provide “one stop shopping” for a variety of fundraising strategies, including membership, sponsorships, major gifts, planned giving, and special events and be specially pertinent to small and mid-sized museums. The presenters will discuss development efforts that have been effective for their institutions, provide samples, and bring prizes for a raffle! THE JAMES IRVINE FOUNDATION APPOINTS NEW PROGRAM DIRECTOR & NEW PROGRAM ASSOCIATE FOR THE ARTS
On Tuesday, July 19th, it was announced that Marcelle Hinand Cady will be the James Irvine Foundation's Program Director for the Arts beginning on September 6th. Marcy has an extensive background in the arts and humanities, directing projects for many large organizations, such as the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment of the Arts and the Lila Wallace - Reader's Digest Fund. She is currently a senior consultant with the TCC Group, a national consulting firm. Also, James Torres Hancock was appointed as Program Associate for the Arts. James has been with the foundation for two years as the Program Associate for California Perspectives. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM AVAILABLE FOR WMA CONFERENCE
The preliminary program is now available for the Western Museums Association (WMA) conference in Pasadena and Los Angeles, "A Rose by Any Other Name: Integrity, Mission, Authenticity," September 28 - October 2, 2005, at WMA PROGRAM. CAM is sponsoring two events at the WMA conference: a preconference workshop on fundraising, "Fundraising Strategies: A Grab-bag of Ideas and Tools" (PC5), and a breakfast on legislative advocacy, "Governor Schwarzenegger, the State Capitol, and Museums" (BR1). DR. ROBERT S. MARTIN COMPLETES TERMS AS DIRECTOR OF IMLS
Dr. Robert S. Martin recently completed his four-year term as Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Dr. Martin was nominated by the President of the United States to be Director of IMLS in June 2001. During his tenure, IMLS has awarded 4,704 grants to America's museums and libraries totaling more than $899 million. Until the President nominates and the Senate confirms a new director, IMLS Deputy Director Mary Chute (www.imls.gov/about/mchute.htm) will administer the day-to-day operations of the agency as Acting Director. A CALL FOR PAPERS, PANELS, AND PRESENTERS AT THE CALIFORNIA INDIAN CONFERENCE 2005
The California Indian Conference (CIC) and Gathering October 7-9, 2005 is an annual event for the exchange of views and information. All topics focusing on California Indians are welcome; however, the main themes are health, education, natural resources and arts as they relate to traditional knowledge. Anyone interested in giving a paper, presentation, or organizing a session or panel, should send an abstract of 150 words to the CIC planning committee c/o Adrienne Colegrove Raymond at abc1@humboldt.edu by September 1. NEH ANNOUNCES ONE ANNUAL DEADLINE FOR CONSULTATION GRANTS
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announces one annual deadline for Consultation Grants for Museums, Libraries and Special Projects. Beginning in 2006, applications for NEH Consultation Grants will be accepted at an annual September deadline. (The 2005 deadline is September 16.) There will no longer be a March deadline. Consultation Grants are awards of up to $10,000 that support consultation with scholars and other advisors in the very early stages of project development. Projects should be grounded in humanities themes and scholarship, and should be of interest to broad audiences. THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA OFFERS NEW LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria has three new learning opportunities for established professionals who wish to enhance their understanding of contemporary and emerging professional issues and competencies. Courses are offered in six-day immersion formats in Victoria, Canada, or via distance education. THE MUSEUM EDUCATION MONITOR IS LOOKING FOR RESEARCH PROJECTS
The Museum Education Monitor (MEM) is compiling a list of projects from visitor research, audience study, program evaluation, professional development, museum education, interpretation, or staff/volunteer development for their August issue. If you would like your project to be included, please send an e-mail to mem@mccastle.com that summarizes: name of project; research question(s) (no more than 50 words); principal researchers; site(s) where research is being conducted; time span; contact information; and key words to describe the project (no more than 4 or 5). The deadline is August 12, 2005. The information will be shared initially only with subscribers but will be available on a continuing basis in the MEM Archives. THE CALIFORNIA TRAVEL TOURISM COMMISSION'S MEDIA EVENTS AND PRESS OUTREACH PROGRAMS
The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) is hosting media events in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in 2005/06. The first event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at SBC Park in San Francisco. New this year is the CTTC's Media Event in Chicago, tentatively scheduled for December 2005. The third event, the highly successful New York Media Marketplace and Reception, is set for Tuesday, February 21, 2006. The fourth media event, still in the planning stages, is the Los Angeles Media Reception and Marketplace tentatively scheduled for May/June 2006. The Museum of Contemporary Art is the only museum in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to contemporary art. The Grants Officer develops, prepares and submits grant proposals, funding requests and reports to foundation and government funding sources; when appropriate, contacts corporate and individual funding sources. Works with curatorial staff, Director of Development, and Associate Director of Institutional Giving to design strategies for new and increased support. Conducts prospect research and maintains database of information regarding funders for the museum.
