There is a limited amount of time left to register for the workshop at the San Bernardino County Museum on Thursday, June 23, 2005 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Workshop participants will experience the process of designing the framework for a strategic plan using a hypothetical museum ("The Sleeper Center for Art & History") as a case study. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a vision, mission, core values, and goals for the case study museum. The workshop presenters are Adrienne Horn, President, and Stephen Horn, Senior Vice President, Museum Management Consultants, Inc.

The registration fee for this workshop is $50 for CAM members and $75 for nonmembers. This fee includes workshop participation, handouts, and a boxed lunch. ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR THE ARTS FROM THE ARTS LICENSE PLATE PASSED THE SENATE

Legislation that may increase the California Arts Council budget by as much as 25% made further progress in the State Legislature this week--thanks to those of you who contacted your elected officials and other arts advocates. On June 1st, the Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill that would ensure that all the proceeds of the Arts License Plate go to the California Arts Council for arts for children and communities (SB 691 by Senator Jackie Speier). This bill will now go to the Assembly Transportation Committee. Members of this committee are: Jenny Oropeza, Chair; Bob Huff, Vice Chair; Ross Bogh; Wilma Chan; Shirley Horton; Betty Karnette; Carol Liu; Dennis Mountjoy; Roger Niello; Fran Pavley; Mark Ridley-Thomas; Simon Salinas; and Alberto Torrico. Currently proceeds from the personalized Arts License Plate fee are directed to the Environmental License Plate fund.

PROTECTING YOUR COLLECTION FROM NATURAL DISASTERS WORKSHOP
Don't forget to register for CAM's regional workshop Identifying Risks and Protecting Your Collection from Natural Disasters on August 4 (in Oakland) and August 18 (in San Diego). This workshop will give staff members and volunteers the tools and knowledge to identify the threats that place our collections at risk and develop ways to safeguard them for the future. There will be handouts on a variety of related topics such as disaster preparedness planning, conservation resources, and storage equipment companies as well as actual samples of materials available to safeguard collections. The presenters are Louis Goldich, Museum Consultant; Donna Williams, Conservator; and William Allen, Collection Insurance Broker, Henderson Phillips. The registration fee for this workshop is $50 for CAM members and $75 for nonmembers. SAVE OUR HISTORY GRANTS
To help achieve its mission of supporting history education and historic preservation, The History Channel will commit $250,000 towards Save Our History grants to local history organizations that design and execute Save Our History local history education and preservation projects in collaboration with local schools or youth groups. History organizations will be able to apply for grants of up to $10,000 to help fund unique, hands-on student projects created to teach students about important aspects of their local history and to actively engage them in the preservation of significant and potentially endangered pieces of their local heritage. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM AVAILABLE FOR WMA CONFERENCE
The preliminary program is now available to for the Western Museums Association’s (WMA) conference in Pasadena and Los Angeles, "A Rose by Any Other Name: Integrity, Mission, Authenticity," September 28 - October 2, 2005, at WMA PROGRAM. CAM is sponsoring two events at the WMA conference: a preconference workshop on fundraising, "Fundraising Strategies: A Grab-bag of Ideas and Tools" (PC5), and a breakfast on legislative advocacy, "Governor Schwarzenegger, the State Capitol, and Museums" (BR1). COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies will be conducting a workshop titled "Introduction to the Management of Museum Collections" September 26 - 30, 2005 at the Smithsonian Institution. NEW IMLS PUBLICATION ON MUSEUMS, LIBRARIES, AND K-12 EDUCATION
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has released a report on how museums and libraries bolster K-12 education and lifelong learning in communities across the Nation. "Charting the Landscape, Mapping New Paths: Museums, Libraries, and K-12 Learning" is based on a 2004 workshop with more than seventy educators, researchers, policymakers, and museum and library professionals. CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS LAUNCHES NEW BRANDING CAMPAIGN
Discover the many states of California.” That’s the message at the center of a new advertising and public service campaign unveiled May 26th to create awareness for California’s 278 State Parks, the largest and most diverse system of state parks in the country. Launching in Sacramento during the month of May, the campaign is the result of a unique public/private partnership between California State Parks and the California State Parks Foundation -- all developed at no cost to the taxpayer. ART BEYOND SITE CONFERENCE -- OCTOBER 14-15, 2005, NYC
This international conference will address the challenge faced by educators, artists and museum professionals, to create multimodal learning opportunities that better serve all audiences. Psychologists and educators will explore ideas and recent research findings relating to other learning modalities, including touch, sound, language, kinesthetics, and even smell. The conference will also examine the relationships between vision, non-vision, and the other senses, through discussions focusing on blindness and learning. CURATOR OF FINE ARTS / UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM, UCSB

DIRECTOR OF INDIVIDUAL GIVING / SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF ART
Reporting to the Deputy Director for External Relations, the Director of Individual Giving will work collaboratively with the Deputy Director for External Relations, the Executive Director, and other key staff and volunteers to reach the individual contributed income goals for the Museum’s Annual Campaign. Qualifications include: at least 5 years prior development experience with a focus on individual giving; demonstrated initiative and achievement in large gift fundraising; ability to strategize gift solicitations and to demonstrate a sensitivity to donor motivations; proven ability to work autonomously and to keep a number of solicitations moving simultaneously; ability to function independently with a variety of constituents; ability to function effectively as team member and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that help meet the goals of and objectives of the program; outstanding verbal and written communication skills along with exceptional interpersonal and organizational abilities; and perseverance, patience, imagination, and creativity. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR / CASTLE AIR FOUNDATION
The Board of Directors of the Castle Air Museum Foundation invites applications for the position of
Executive Director of the Castle Air Museum. The Museum was formed in 1981 and features the largest collection of military aircraft on the west coast, an indoor museum, educational programs, an aircraft restoration operation, a gift shop and restaurant, and volunteer programs. Responsibilities include management of Museum programs and operations, the collection, facilities and staff. The Executive Director will execute policies of the Board of Directors and provide leadership in development and implementation of strategic plans for the Museum and stewardship of the collection. In addition, the Executive Director will be responsible for the financial management and oversight, marketing, and fundraising efforts of the Museum. DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE / THE MEXICAN MUSEUM
The Mexican Museum seeks a qualified development professional with an interest in Latino arts and cultures and at least two years experience in non-profit fundraising, including grant writing, membership processing, and event planning. The San Jose Museum of Art is seeking a dynamic individual to lead all aspects of its Museum Store. The Museum Store is an exciting component of Museum programming. A successful candidate for the position will have a track record not only in sound fiscal management of retail operations but also in creative merchandising, “trend-forward” product selection, and an ability to achieve an engaging product mix.
