REGISTER NOW FOR CAM'S STRATEGIC PLANNING WORKSHOP

The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the strategic planning process and its implications for decision-making. A case study will be distributed in advance that will provide background information about a hypothetical museum (the "Sleeper Center for Art & History"), its community, and critical issues impacting the museum. During the workshop, participants will be identified as "Board" or "Staff" and will experience the process of designing the framework for a strategic plan using the case study museum. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a vision, mission, core values, and goals for the case study museum as well as understand how to write objectives and action plans. The workshop presenters are Adrienne Horn, President, and Stephen Horn, Senior Vice President, Museum Management Consultants, Inc.

TWO CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS RECEIVE AAM ACCREDITATION

The American Association of Museums (AAM) is pleased to announce that 13 U.S. museums have been awarded accreditation. The California Association of Museums would like to congratulate the San Francisco Airport Museums and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, two institutions that were awarded subsequent accreditation. Accreditation strengthens individual museums and the profession as a whole by promoting ethical and professional practices that enable museum leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources wisely, and remain accountable to the public. AAM accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments and outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. For more information about AAM and the Accreditation Program please visit www.aam-us.org.

FEDERAL FUNDING UPDATE

On May 19th, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Congressional Arts Caucus Amendment to increase funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) by $10 million and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by $5 million. For the first time ever, the amendment passed by voice vote, which means there will not be a detailed record of who voted for or against the amendment. The House is still wrapping up other amendments to the Interior Appropriations bill, including two amendments to cut NEA funding. [From Americans for the Arts' Arts Action News 5/19/05]

On May 17, 2005, the American Association of Museums (AAM) contacted Museum Advocacy Team members with an urgent message on Senator Jeff Sessions' (R-AL) amendment 646 to reduce the Transportation Enhancements (TE) program funding by $1.1 billion. AAM is happy to report that Senators defeated the Sessions amendment in a resounding 84-16 vote, affirming the Senate's widespread bipartisan support for this important program. The TE program makes funds available to museums in all 50 states for improvements to parking facilities, creation of pathways connecting museums with roadways and walkways and interpretive signage of historic landmarks, and for development of transportation museums. Visit www.enhancements.org for explanations of the funding categories and examples of TE projects in your state. AAM is asking museum advocates to contact their Senators and thank them for their floor comments and votes in support of this important public program (i.e. Nay votes on the Sessions amendment). See the results of the Roll Call vote on the Sessions Amendment here. Download contact information for senators and their transportation staffers here. [Excerpted from AAM Action Alert 5/19/05]

REMINDER: SUPPORT THE ARTS IN CALIFORNIA THROUGH SB 691
In the CAM Legislative Alert 5/24/05, you were encouraged to take a few minutes of your time today to send an email or fax in support of Senate Bill 691 to exempt the Arts License Plates from future diversion of a portion of fees to the Environmental License Plate Fund (ELPF). In 2004, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) collected approximately $1.1 million to support arts programming from the sale of the Arts License Plate, and more than $1.5 million in fees for the ELPF--$400,000 more than the amount collected to support the California Arts Council (CAC). SB 691 would result in the full $2.6 million collected being dedicated to the CAC to support arts education and local arts programming. The Senate Appropriations Committee will address this issue tomorrow, May 26, 2005 at 1:00 PM. For additional information and instructions, view http://www.calmuseums.org/news/editions/legislativealert_2005-5-24.html
