| VALUE OF VOLUNTEER TIME INCREASES BY 36 CENTS |
Independent Sector (http://independentsector.org/) has announced that the value of volunteer time has reached $17.55, up 36 cents from a year earlier. The hourly value, updated yearly, is based on the average hourly earnings of all non-agricultural workers as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). To arrive at its figure, Independent Sector took the BLS number and increased it by 12 percent to estimate for fringe benefits. Nationally, Independent Sector estimates the total value of hours volunteered in 2004 was equivalent to approximately $272 billion of contributed services, assuming the total number of volunteer hours held constant from previous years. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the California Association of Museums (CAM), thank you to all the museums who are participating in California Museum Month! California Museum Month in May 2005 will focus the attention of the media, legislators, and the public on the important role that museums play in our state. In late March, CAM sent a general press release and a 30-second public service announcement to 238 newspapers and radio stations across the state about California Museum Month. On April 15th, the diverse events submitted by our members will be posted on our web site at www.calmuseums.org and a more comprehensive release will be sent to the media with information about the various activities being hosted across the state.
In honor of California Museum Month and International Museum Day, CAM will be hosting a Legislative Advocacy Day on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 in Sacramento. Museum professionals will be meeting with elected officials on this day to discuss the needs of the California museum field as a whole. The day will begin with a kick-off meeting at the newly renovated Leland Stanford Mansion and culminate with the California Museum Month Reception and President's Awards at the California Museum of History, Women, and the Arts. The program will include special guest speaker Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts Council, and the presentation of the President’s Awards by CAM President, Stephen Becker.
