| NEH PRESERVATION ASSISTANCE GRANTS FOR SMALLER INSTITUTIONS |
The National Endowment for Humanities recently announced the guidelines for their Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions. These grants help small and mid-size institutions, such as libraries, museums, and historical societies, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. These may include special collections of books and journals, archives and manuscripts, prints and photographs, moving images, sound recordings, architectural and cartographic records, decorative and fine arts, textiles, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, furniture, and historical objects. Awards of up to $5,000 provide support for consultant fees, workshop registration fees, travel and per diem expenses, and the costs of purchasing and shipping preservation supplies and equipment. No cost- sharing is required. All grants are awarded for a period of eighteen months. Application materials and instructions are available at: www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.html. For projects beginning in January 2006, the receipt deadline is May 16, 2005.
| WORKSHOP ON BUILDING NEW MUSEUM AUDIENCES |
The first of five workshops in CAM's 2005 Regional Workshop Series will take place in April, titled Building A Diverse Audience for Your Museum. The basic resources and principles needed to launch an audience development campaign and a basic template for assessing resources in your community and museum will be addressed. Both workshops will be moderated by Laura Esparza of Laura Esparza & Associates Arts Consultants and feature presenters who are museum professionals and experts in audience development. In San Jose, the presenters are: Leo Carpenter, Jr., Museum Planning Assistant/Community Liaison, California Indian Heritage Center, California Parks and Recreation; Marie Acosta, Arts Marketing Institute and Executive Director of the Latino Arts Network; and Jenni Martin, Education Director, Children’s Discovery Museum. In Los Angeles, the presenters are: John Katagi, Director of Support Services, Japanese American National Museum; Tomas Benitez, Executive Director, Self-Help Graphics; and Evelyn Davis, Director of Marketing, Autry National Center. The dates of this workshops are:
Monday, April 25, 2005, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM / Children's Discovery Museum, San Jose
Friday, April 29, 2005, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM / Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles
The registration fee for this workshop is $50 for CAM members and $75 for nonmembers. | NEW PARTNER IN CAM DISCOUNT PROGRAM: NORTHERN STATES CONSERVATION CENTER |
Last year, CAM launched a new discount program to help CAM members save money and provide greater awareness about the services and products available to museums. We are pleased to announce that the Northern States Conservation Center joined the program and is offering a 10% discount to CAM members for their online museum classes on collections care and management. The Northern States Conservation Center will be featuring a repeat of its online class "Museum 201: Storage for Infinity," scheduled to start Monday April 4th and run through Friday, May 13th, 2005. This course concentrates on storage philosophy and planning, collections handling, materials and techniques for storing collections. The California Travel and Tourism Commision recently released California Travel Impacts by County, 1992-2003; 2004 Preliminary State Estimates, a report that illustrates the impact of tourism on California. According to the report, the travel industry in California continues to reap the benefits of a rebounding economy as figures for 2004 reflect an upsurge in direct travel spending. Total spending in California from visitors was $82.5 billion in 2004, an increase of 7.4 percent from 2003 and the largest gain since 2000. REMINDER: MINIMUM WAGE SURVEY
There are currently two bills in the California state legislature that propose to increase the minimum wage (AB 48 and SB 862). CAM is requesting information from the California museum field regarding the impact an increase in minimum wage will have on our institutions. CAM's Legislative Committee will use this information to formulate our position on these bills and represent the interests of the California museum field. Please take a few minutes to complete our MINIMUM WAGE SURVEY to gather information about the impact a minimum wage increase will have on your museum. GOING FREE: THE PROS AND CONS OF OFFERING FREE ADMISSION TO CALIFORNIA MUSEUMS
Cultural Connections is hosting a program on Tuesday, April 12 from 2pm to 5pm at the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) that will address the question of free admission in museums in California. Dan Keegan, Oshman Executive Director of SJMA, will share why the San Jose Museum of Art stopped charging admission and the results of that decision. Marjorie Schwarzer, Chair of the Department of Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University, will share another point of view, one that questions offering free museum admission. A session moderator will challenge both presenters to delve into the issues. This program is free to Cultural Connections members and $10 for non-members. RESEARCH ON MUSEUM LEARNING: WHO'S DOING WHAT NOW?
Are you working on a research project on how visitors learn in museums, how museums enrich the lives of visitors, or the role of museums in the larger experiences of Americans? MUSEUM EDUCATION MONITOR is compiling a list of such projects for the April issue of MUSEUM EDUCATION MONITOR. SMITHSONIAN CENTER FOR EDUCATION AND MUSEUM STUDIES WORKSHOP
The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies will be conducting a workshop titled "Introduction to the Management of Museum Collections" September 26 - 30, 2005. The workshop is an introduction to various elements in the management of collections, focusing on the practical application of policies and procedures necessary to establish and maintain intellectual and physical control of museum collections which are broadly covered at a level intended for new and/or untrained museum staff. INTANGIBLE HERITAGE COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is offering "Intangible Heritage," a 6-day immersion course for professionals in museums, heritage associations, and related organizations from May 9-14. While museums and other heritage agencies are skilled at preserving the tangible evidence of our past and present, they are less adept at also preserving the traditional practices, art forms, crafts, religious and social customs, languages, oral histories and stories, and cultural values and perspectives that reflect and perpetuate peoples' cultural heritage.
