| BUILDING A DIVERSE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MUSEUM |
CAM is pleased to announce the 2005 Regional Workshop Series, featuring one-day workshops for the California museum community. The series starts this April with Building A Diverse Audience for Your Museum. This workshop will share best practices for building a diverse audience using the experience of museum professionals and other experts in the field of audience development who are also people of color. The basic resources and principles needed to launch an audience development campaign and a basic template for assessing resources in your community and museum will be addressed. Participants will also develop and share plans that could be employed in their organizations when organization buy-in from every level of the museum is achieved. A "bonus session" after the workshop will present basic vocabulary and knowledge regarding ethnic diversity in order to better communications with a diverse public.

| GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL TO CREATE THE "CALIFORNIA MUSEUM FOR HISTORY, WOMEN, AND THE ARTS" |
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation yesterday to change the mission of the California State History Museum to create a new California Museum for History, Women, and the Arts--an effort spearheaded by First Lady Maria Shriver. At the bill-signing ceremony, Schwarzenegger said, "This museum will showcase California's extraordinary archives, its rich and unique history and it will focus our attentions on the stories and the struggles and the accomplishments and triumphs of our state's most remarkable women." The bill, AB 42, was written by Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, demonstrating strong bipartisan support. | REMINDER: CALIFORNIA MUSEUM MONTH |
In a continuing effort to communicate the value and importance of museums in California, the California Association of Museums (CAM) will be organizing its sixth statewide public relations and advocacy campaign on behalf of the state's museums. California Museum Month in May 2005 will focus the attention of media, legislators, and the public on the important role that museums play in our state. To make this statewide event a success, we need your assistance. There are two ways your institution can participate in this effort: host an event for California Museum Month or participate in CAM's Legislative Advocacy Day in Sacramento on May 18, 2005. All participation forms must be submitted by March 25, 2005. Together, we can create a month-long celebration that will draw public and political attention to the vast and important resources of California's museums and promote your institution's programs and collection. For additional information or to complete CAM's online form, please visit http://www.calmuseums.org/museum_month.
