CAM is please to announce the 2005 Regional Workshop Series, featuring one-day workshops for the California museum community. These workshops serve as affordable professional development programs on five aspects of museum work: diversifying museum audiences; strategic planning; disaster planning for collections; fundraising strategies; and visitor experience training. The workshop series is supported in part by Wells Fargo, the Wells Fargo Foundation, and the museums hosting the workshops. | REMINDER: VISUAL UNDERSTANDING IN EDUCATION 2005 INSTITUTE |
All educators are invited to participate in the 2005 Visual Understanding in Education (VUE) Institute, to be held June 13 through 16 in San Francisco, hosted by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and co-sponsored by CAM. This institute will offer introductory training in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a dynamic learner-centered method for sparking interest in art in both classroom and gallery settings. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the principles of VTS using the collections at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. If used well, VTS can give beginners the skills to look at, discuss, and probe visual art. This event is presented by veteran museum educator Philip Yenawine and is based on the research and theory of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen. | NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM SERVICES GRANT DEADLINE EXTENDED |
The Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services Grant Program has extended its application deadline to May 15th. The program provides grants from $5,000 to $20,000 to support museum activities of Native American tribes; Alaska Native villages, regional corporations, and village corporations; and organizations that primarily serve Native Hawaiians. Funding will be provided for three areas: programming; professional development; and enhancement of museum services. See the grant guidelines for additional details about these three funding areas. The nominating process for the 2005-2006 CAM Board of Directors is currently underway. Directors are elected for two-year terms and shall serve no more than three consecutive terms of office. Petitions for placement on the ballot must be submitted by April 1, 2005. REMINDER: CAM CONFERENCE IN FEBRUARY 2006
SAVE THE DATE! The next CAM conference, Eyes on the Horizon: Envisioning and Realizing Our Future, will be held February 21-24, 2006 at the Monterey Beach Resort in Monterey. FAMILY TRAVEL SPOTS AND IDEAS WANTED
The California Travel and Tourism Commission is preparing a news release about travel for family reunions and extended family travel. Families are turning the traditional one-day reunion celebration into a multi-day vacation. They will be pitching this news release to daily newspapers, long-lead travel, and parenting magazines. They will endeavor to include as many submissions as possible, but please note there are no guarantees. Their goal is to provide the most newsworthy information to journalists while representing all California regions. Submission deadline is Friday, March 4, 2005. COMING UP TALLER NOMINATIONS DUE MARCH 24
The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities is inviting nominations for its 2005 Coming Up Taller Awards. Offered in partnership with IMLS, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Coming Up Taller Awards recognize the accomplishments of after-school and out-of-school programs and activities across the country. The $10,000 Coming Up Taller Awards assist organizations, further knowledge, and encourage development of future programs. SAVE OUR HISTORY AWARDS PROGRAM
History organizations can get involved in The History Channel Save Our History program and win up to $10,000 in Awards. Submit a project for consideration in one of three separate award categories: Save Our History National Preservation Award, Save Our History National Classroom Award, and Save Our History National Lowe’s Community Award. Finalists will receive a trip to Washington, DC for three days of history-themed activities and three grand prize winners will be honored at the Save Our History National Awards Event in May. THE VISITOR VOICE: INCORPORATING VISITOR RESPONSES
On Monday, March 14, 2005, the Museum Educators of Southern California, in conjunction with Museum Education Roundtable and the Docent League of Southern California, will host a lecture by Kathleen McLean titled The Visitor Voice. Through a keynote address and breakout discussion groups, this program will focus on: the scope of visitor voices in museum exhibitions and programming; multiple approaches to involving visitor voices; and practical information on how educators act as irreplaceable agents in giving visitors a voice. ARTS EDUCATION LEADERSHIP: LEVERAGING THE VISION CONFERENCE
The California Alliance for Arts Education is hosting a conference, titled Arts Education Leadership: Leveraging the Vision, on May 1 and 2, 2005. This conference will provide: advocacy resources; opportunities to learn about trends and current research in arts education; promising practices in district-wide arts planning efforts; characteristics of successful education networks; and cross-sector conversations and networking. SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM DAY
Museum Day is a national program that kicks off Smithsonian magazine’s 35th Anniversary by offering free admission to select museums and cultural venues nationwide on Saturday, April 30, 2005 for Smithsonian readers and their friends.
