| PRESIDENT BUSH RELEASES FY 2006 FEDERAL BUDGET |
The release of the President's budget initiates AAM's year-long effort to secure appropriations for IMLS and other federal agencies that support the museum community. Among the primary federal programs that support museums, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) was the only agency whose proposed budget includes an increase over its FY 2005 appropriations. The FY 2006 request for IMLS museum services is $38.915 million which is a $4.19 million increase over FY 2005. First time funding is requested for a separate IMLS program authorized in the African American History and Culture Act at $2 million. For FY 2006, the President has requested $121.3 million for NEA and $138.1 million for NEH. The President has level-funded these programs--he has neither offered an increase, nor has he requested any cuts. However, he has proposed a redistribution of $6.5 million that would result in a 30 percent cut in the NEA Challenge America program. A budget chart on AAM's Web site outlines the funding levels requested for IMLS, NEA, NEH, the National Science Foundation (and Informal Science Education), and the U.S. Department of Education.

The new, cost-free service also offers traffic reports, unlimited queries, and allows for customization, and no banner ads or other paid advertising will show on search result pages. | NEW ACCREDITATION STANDARDS FOR MUSEUMS |
The AAM Accreditation Commission has released a revised set of Characteristics of an Accreditable Museum, Accreditation Commission Expectations, Core Questions, and eligibility criteria. These documents, effective January 1, 2005, are the framework of the Accreditation Program and collectively regarded as the standards for accreditation. The revised Accreditation documents reflect changes in how society and the museum field regard issues such as public accountability, community engagement, and measuring achievement. The new set of characteristics replaces the version in use since 1995. The new accreditation standards, plus a full summary of the changes, are available at www.aam-us.org/museumresources/accred.
