CAM CONFERENCE 2006: EYES ON THE HORIZON

Save the date! The California Association of Museums is moving its annual conference from July to February of each year. As a result, the next CAM conference, Eyes on the Horizon: Envisiong and Realizing Our Future, will be held February 21-24, 2006 at the Monterey Beach Resort in Monterey. Monterey’s breathtaking natural beauty and cultural offerings will be the backdrop for an unforgettable conference. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to network with your colleagues, acquire new skills and knowledge, and get reinvigorated on the beaches of Monterey. AASLH AWARDS PROGRAM--REMINDER

The deadline for the American Association for State and Local History Awards (AASLH) Program is quickly approaching! The Awards Program not only honors significant achievement in the field of state and local history but also brings public recognition to small and large organizations, institutions, and programs that contribute to this arena. By publicly recognizing excellent achievements, AASLH strives to inspire others. AASLH recognizes achievements through four awards: the Award of Merit; a Certificate of Commendation; the Albert B. Corey Award; and the Award of Distinction. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2005. IMLS ANNOUNCES NEW WEB SITE ON AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced its support of In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience, launched February 1, 2005 in honor of African American History Month. Through images, maps, narratives and music, the exhibition presents, chronicles, and interprets the migratory movements that have formed and transformed the African-American community and the nation in the last century. Created by New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the groundbreaking new Web site makes accessible to the general public more than 16,500 pages of essays, books, articles, and manuscripts, 8,300 illustrations, 100 lesson plans, and 60 maps that will help users understand the peoples, places, and the events that have shaped African America's migration traditions of the past four hundred years. The project is made possible in part by a $2.4 million dollar grant from IMLS with the support of the Congressional Black Caucus. Visit the Web site at http://www.inmotionaame.org.

2005 MUSE AWARDS DEADLINE EXTENDED
The deadline for submitting online applications to the 2005 MUSE awards has been extended until Friday, February 4, 2005. The MUSE Awards are sponsored by the AAM Media and Technology Committee and honor the best in museum DVDs, CD-ROMs, Web sites, videos, multimedia programs, and audio tours. Applications must be made by AAM Institutional or Individual Members. There is a $100 entry fee per entry. AAM Media and Technology committee members receive a 50% discount on entry fees. SMAC-AAM's "SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL" LUNCHEON
The Small Museum Administrators Committee of AAM (SMAC-AAM) is seeking representatives from small museums to make 5-10 minute presentations at the “Small is Beautiful” luncheon at the AAM Annual Meeting on Small Museum Day (Monday, May 2, 2005). Presentations should detail activities that small museum carried out, illustrating the incredible resourcefulness of small museums. THE MEXICAN MUSEUM CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

VISUAL RESOURCES ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE IN MIAMI BEACH
The Visual Resources Association, the international organization of image media professionals, will host its 23rd annual conference in Miami Beach, Florida from March 6-10, 2005. This year’s conference focuses on project development, sharing and aggregating data, image indexing and retrieval, implementing the new Cataloging Cultural Objects guidelines, collaborative models to sustain digital collections, new tools for teaching and learning with images, and other related topics. DIBNER AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 15
The Dibner Award recognizes excellence in museums and museum exhibits that interpret the history of technology, industry and engineering to the public. The deadline for submission of applications/nominations is February 15, 2005. Winning exhibits, in addition to being well designed and produced, should raise pertinent historical issues. SMALL MUSEUM ADMINISTRATORS' COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Small Museum Administrators' Committee (SMAC) is offering four $500 scholarships to assist in underwriting the costs to attend the 2005 American Association of Museums Annual Meeting scheduled for May 1-5, 2005 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Applicants must be current SMAC members through AAM and be employed in a museum with a budget under $350,000. Only one applicant per museum per year is eligible. CARE - AAM SCHOLARSHIPS
The Committee on Audience Research and Evaluation (CARE) of the American Association of Museums (AAM) is currently accepting applications for two CARE Scholarships to the 2005 Annual Meeting of AAM. The scholarships are for $1000 each, awarded to two individuals interested or active in the field of audience research and evaluation. The monies must be used to attend the 2005 AAM Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. Two scholarships are available: (1) student scholarship for CARE members who are currently enrolled students and (2) first-time attendee scholarship, CARE members who have never before attended an AAM Annual Meeting. NAME SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AAM MEETING
NAME is offering to assist graduate students in museums studies attend the AAM annual meeting in Indianapolis. Applicants must be full-time students engaged in an exhibition-related course of study in the United States. The scholarship includes complimentary registration, partial travel stipend ($100), and attendance at NAME events with a NAME mentor. To apply, submit a cover letter (maximum two pages) discussing your current course of study and career goals, indicating how attendance to the AAM Annual Meeting will benefit you and your course of study; a letter of recommendation/support from an intern-ship supervisor or academic advisor; and a resume. Preferably, the application will be mailed electronically to esiegel@nyscience.org. MANAGER OF ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS AND GIFTS / UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
USC seeks an individual to manage the university library’s archival storage, lead a collection emergency response team and develop and undertake large-scale organization and re-housing projects. The ideal candidate will manage the physical storage locations, develop and implement storage policies for all archives, integrate collections according to media type, track all collections by updating and using the library’s online catalog, and manage collection deliveries to and from reading rooms.
