SCHWARZENEGGER  APPOINTS NEW CAC DIRECTOR AND PROPOSES CAC BUDGET

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of Muriel Johnson as the new Director of the California Arts Council. Johnson comes to the position having just ended 12 years of service as a member of the Sacramento Board of Supervisors. Johnson also serves on the boards and committees of such organizations as the Stanford Mansion Foundation, the Community Advisory Committee for California State University-Sacramento School of the Arts and the Crocker Art Museum Architecture Committee. She succeeds interim director Juan Carillo. For more information about Muriel Johnson, visit www.cac.ca.gov/update/updatecurrent.cfm.

The Governor proposed a budget for the California Arts Council of $3.059 million for 2005-06. With a budget deficit exceeding $8 billion this coming year, the Governor presented a budget that is "painful" and that he himself does not like because it doesn't address the fundamental structural problems he says produces the deficits. Next year's deficit is expected to top $10 billion. The budget of the CAC will include: $1.153 million from the State General Fund; $968,000 from the Arts License Plate funds; and $938,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts.

NEW ARTS EDUCATION GRANTS AVAILABLE

The California Arts Council (CAC) announced a new grant program aimed at providing grants to arts organizations who offer arts activities to K-12 youth and children. The Youth Education in the Arts! (YEA!) program continues the California Arts Council's priority and commitment of engaging young people in the arts through sequential, hands-on arts activities by supporting ongoing arts in education programs at schools and community sites. The $500,000 YEA! program will award grants ranging from $3,000-$5,000 to eligible nonprofit organizations in California. The online application was developed through a partnership of the CAC and the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF). The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2005. NEW GUIDELINES FOR IMLS LIBRARY AND MUSEUM COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS

With its 2005 National Leadership Grant guidelines, the Institute of Museum and Library Services introduced new categories of grant funding that promote collaboration between libraries and museums, as well as with other organizations, in all categories. The categories of funding are: Advancing Learning Communities, which supports the development of learning networks and services for people of all ages; Building Digital Resources, that supports the creation, use, and preservation of significant digital resources as well as the development of digital management tools; and Research and Demonstration, which supports basic and applied research and demonstration projects to test potential solutions to problems in a real-world environment. The previous category of Library and Museum Collaborations has been eliminated. The new categories of funding encourage collaborations of all types but do not require formal partnerships.

The application deadline for 2005 National Leadership Grants in all categories is February 1, 2005. Guidelines are on the IMLS Web site at http://www.imls.gov/grants/museum/pdf/2005NLG.pdf.
