SCHWARZENEGGER  STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS TONIGHT

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will deliver his second State of the State address tonight, January 5, 2005 at 5:00 pm. It is expected that the Governor will address his plans to restructure government to make it more efficient and effective. He continues to indicate he will not support increasing taxes but wants to balance the budget with more efficiency in government. There is likely to be policy clashes on this with the Legislature that will shape much of the budget debate this session. The State of the State can be viewed on the Governor's website at www.governor.ca.gov. There is a link on the right side of the page.

CAM has been actively advocating for a new cultural division to be included in this new structure, which could shape and enhance public support for museums. For more infomation on this issue and other CAM legislative efforts, visit www.calmuseums.org/legislation.

CAM REQUESTS FEEDBACK ON CCHE GRANT PROCESS

The California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) Board met December 13-14, 2004 at the California State Library in Sacramento to hear presentations from 57 grant applicants for CCHE's first cycle distribution of Proposition 40 bond funds. The 57 applicants who presented their projects were recommended out of 276 total Endowment grant applications. At the conclusion of the 2-day meeting, the Board voted to reserve specific allocations from this funding cycle for 33 grant finalists pending further staff findings. A complete list of the grant finalists and reserved amounts can be found at www.library.ca.gov/PressReleases/pr_041215.cfm. To carry out Proposition 40's mandate, CCHE will, over the cycles established by its Board, distribute $122 million in Proposition 40 funds.

Celeste DeWald, CAM Executive Director, and other CAM board members were present at the CCHE board meeting to observe the presentations and deliberations. It is our hope that CCHE will provide valuable and much-needed support to California museums, thus improving the chances that this agency will have longevity and future support from state legislators. CAM is in the process of compiling feedback from the California museum field about this first grant cycle to share with CCHE staff and board members. Any feedback and constructive criticism you can provide would be greatly appreciated and will remain anonymous. Please contact Celeste DeWald at cam@calmuseums.org or (831) 471-9970.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HUGH DAVIES AND CORRECTION

Congratulations to CAM supporter Hugh Davies, Ph.D. for receiving the California Arts Council (CAC) Director's Award for his contribution to arts and culture in California. We regret to say that we failed to include him in the list of CAC Director's Award recipients in the last issue of CAM e-News.

Dr. Davies is the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego where he has served since 1983. In that time, the Museum has grown dramatically and has established two locations in La Jolla and downtown San Diego. As a concerned member of the arts community of San Diego, he has addressed the issue of reaching the audiences of the neighboring city of Tijuana and has acted as a good neighbor. Dr. Davies has shaped policies and programs to develop the Museum's binational influence. Under his long and dedicated watch, the Museum has set an example in the Southwest border region of extending a hand in friendship and establishing a tone of "Mi casa es tu casa." He serves as an exemplary example of how the arts can be used to develop goodwill between nations. His friendship with the Arts Council is long and established and he has demonstrated his public responsibility on numerous occasions when he has served as a CAC panelist. [Excerpted from CAC Weekly Update 12/19/04.]
