| VISUAL UNDERSTANDING IN EDUCATION 2005 INSTITUTE |
All educators are invited to participate in the 2005 Visual Understanding in Education (VUE) Institute, to be held June 13 through 16 in San Francisco, hosted by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and co-sponsored by CAM. This institute will offer introductory training in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a dynamic learner-centered method for sparking interest in art in both classroom and gallery settings. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the principles of VTS using the collections at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. If used well, VTS can give beginners the skills to look at, discuss, and probe visual art. This event is presented by veteran museum educator Philip Yenawine and is based on the research and theory of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen. For more information about VTS or the upcoming VUE Institute, visit VUE's website at www.vue.org. CAM is proud to be a co-sponsor of this valuable workshop and additional information will be sent to members in January.
| PART II OF FEDERAL FUNDING REPORT: OFFICE OF MUSEUM SERVICES |
As reported in the last edition of CAM e-News, Congress finalized the FY 2005 federal budget on November 20, 2004. This report is Part II of a summary of how arts, culture and museum federal funding faired. Congress essentially froze all non-defense spending, allowing small increases in certain programs, and reducing or eliminating funding for numerous programs. Fortunately, cultural funding was one of the few domestic spending areas that will realize some small increases. The FY 2005 budget for the Office of Museum Services was approved at $34.8 million, an increase of $3.4 million compared to FY 2004. The categories of funding are as follows: $17.85 million for Museums for America; $446,000 for museum assessment; $3.6 million for the Museum Conservation Program; $7.54 million for the Museum National Leadership Project; and $843,000 for Native American Museum services. For a summary of the approved budgets of other federal agencies and earmarked funds, please visit the Americans for the Arts web site at http://ww3.artsusa.org.
