AASLH TRAVELING EXHIBIT CLEARINGHOUSE
The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is pleased to announce a new history traveling exhibit clearinghouse. AASLH learned over the years that history organizations of all sizes have a hard time finding quality history exhibits for their temporary exhibition space. They also learned there are quality exhibits out there for rent or loan, but organizations have a difficult time getting the news out nationwide. To help combat these two challenges, AASLH has used its new web site to establish a national database where both members and nonmembers can list exhibits. You must be a member of AASLH, however, to view the traveling exhibits that are available. To learn more about this new service, look under "Programs" at www.aaslh.org.
CALIFORNIA CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL ENDOWMENT UPDATE
The California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) is a new state agency established in 2002 through legislation authored by Assembly member Marco Firebaugh. One of its main goals is to create a competitive grant program to fund public agencies and nonprofit organizations that will share the many stories and narrative events that embrace California's culture and history. The Board of the California Cultural and Historical Endowment met on August 30, 2004 and approved the guidelines for their first cycle of funding. At this time, $122 million in Proposition 40 funds is available for the CCHE competitive grant program for real property, capital assets, and other related costs. This funding will be divided into three rounds of funding over the next three years. Their current grant application, with the deadline of October 1, 2004, addresses the first cycle of the first round of funding available. The total amount available for the first cycle of the first round will be up to $35 million. The maximum grant award amount is $5 million and they are requiring a one-to-one match in cash, volunteer hours, or other means. To view the approved guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions, please visit CCHE's web site at http://www.library.ca.gov/cche. CCHE also established a toll free number for inquires at 866-311-2178.
CAM has actively advocated for and supported the development of this new agency and we encourage all museums and cultural institutions to participate in its activities. CAM represented the interests of California museums at all the CCHE’s board meetings this year and will continue to keep members abreast of any future developments. Please contact Celeste DeWald, Executive Director, at the CAM office if you have any questions or comments.
accessARTS WORKSHOPS
A fall workshops series for museum educators, classroom teachers, and artists is now available, titled accessArts Workshops: The Collaborative Approach that Puts Creativity Back in the Classroom. Each workshop will feature two successful school-based models, Start with Art and Arts in the City. Participants will explore classroom-tested materials that help museum educators, artists, teachers and students make their own direct connections between the arts, curriculum, content standards and meaningful community arts experiences. Start With Art uses the arts as the core of learning in any curriculum, including very structured ones like Open Court. Arts in the City demonstrates how teachers and students can use community arts to inspire classroom learning while supporting grade level curriculum and standards-based academics.
