On
Saturday, July 31, 2004
the Governor blue-penciled the budget for the California Arts Council. His comments were: “I am deleting the $1,000,000 legislative augmentation for local arts grants. Given the fiscal condition of the State, this reduction is necessary to help build a prudent reserve and bring ongoing expenditures in line with existing resources over the longer term." As a result, the Governor established the Arts Council budget at $3.128 million for 2004-05. All funds have been placed in the Operations Budget of the agency. The budget is made up of the following revenue sources: $1.075 million General Fund; $ .893 million Arts License Plate; $ .963 million Federal funds; and $ .197 million Reimbursements. Created at the California State Library with funds from Proposition 40, the newly formed California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) will distribute $122 million to reveal and preserve the history and culture of
California
over the next three years. Diane Matsuda, the Executive Officer of CCHE, has been conducting workshops across the state this summer to solicit feedback on drafts of a concept paper and the grant application and criteria for this new granting agency. A draft of the grant application and information about CCHE is available at California Cultural and Historical Endowment. The first grant deadline may be as soon as October 1, 2004.
CAM
has actively advocated for and supported the development of this new agency and we encourage all museums and cultural institutions to participate in its activities.
CAM
will be representing the interests of
California
museums at CCHE’s board meeting on
August 11, 2004
in
Sacramento
and future meetings that will shape how these funds are distributed. Please contact Celeste DeWald, Executive Director, at the

AAM PANELISTS WANTED
AAM's Media and Technology Program Committee is looking for two panelists for a session titled “Getting Online 101.” The session is to focus on practical advice and where-to-start information for any museum with limited budget and time resources, but a desire to establish an online presence. The session should be targeted to museum employees who may be thinking about, or tasked with an online project. Ideally, one panelist would be struggling with the challenges of establishing or planning a website, the other would have just been through the process and have a website, albeit a modest one. Practical advice, pitfalls and “do's” and “don'ts” should be the focus of these presentations. In an effort to attract genuine small museum personnel, financial assistance for travel and accommodation is offered for qualifying panelists. For information, please contact the session's chair, Nik Honeysett, at nhoneysett@getty.edu.

The federal government has recently adopted a new policy requiring organizations to provide a DUNS (data universal numbering system) with their grant applications and proposal to keep track of how federal grant money is awarded and dispersed. A DUNS number is issued by Dun and Bradstreet by phone at 1-866-705-5711 or through the web site https://eupdate.dnb.com/requestoptions.html. NOTE: the turn-around time for a DUNS number through the web site is 30 days while the phone option is only 24 hours.
