GREEN MUSEUMS ACCORD

Declare Your Museum’s Commitment to the Environment - Sign on to the Accord!

Since 2006, the California Association of Museums (CAM) has been taking leadership and creating dialogue around environmental sustainability through its Green Museums Initiative . The Green Museum Accord was one of its first activities and served as inspiration to American Alliance of Museums ’ (AAM) professional network on environmental sustainability, PIC Green , in its formative years. Now in 2013, CAM and AAM have teamed up to take the Green Museums Accord national and encourage even greater participation in the effort to make museums and communities “green”!

The Green Museums Accord is an institution-wide pledge to be environmentally responsible. Click here to see a list of current Green Museums Accord signers .

The Green Museums Accord consists of five action steps:
1. Commit. Publicly declare your institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship by signing the Green Museum Accord.

2. Evaluate. Make environmental sustainability part of the institutional thought process on every major decision and project. Measure current performance and establish baselines.

3. Implement. Make sustainable choices when selecting vendors, products, and processes. Reduce your museum's ecological footprint using best practices, measurable strategies, benchmarks, and targets.

4. Educate. Involve visitors, staff, colleagues, board members, vendors, and other stakeholders in active learning and discussion around environmental sustainability and sustainable museum practices.

5. Share. Advance the understanding of environmental issues in the museum community and inspire others to action by contributing actively to the professional dialogue and knowledge base.

A museum’s participation in the Green Museums Accord requires the endorsement of either an institution’s chief executive or through a board resolution. Any employee can sign up for the Accord (with leadership endorsement) by completing the form on the bottom of this page.

Pledge renewal is required every two years. Participation in the Green Museums Accord is welcome to museums of all types and sizes throughout the globe. It is not tied to American Alliance of Museums (AAM) or California Association of Museums (CAM) membership.

The Green Museums Accord is a voluntary pledge, and is not legally binding. Each institution will self evaluate its progress. In keeping with our fifth principle, we do ask that you share your experiences to help us inspire others to actions and build a rich resource of case studies and best practices.

Share Your Commitment!

A pledge certificate will be sent to each museum that adopts the Accord, and your museum has complete freedom to list the Accord in your promotional materials (e.g. “this museum is part of the Green Museums Accord”), as long as your membership is current. We want you to communicate your museum's environmental commitment to your visitors and inform them of the good work you are doing to help the environment.
